Construction News Written Submission to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario Standing Committee on General Government
CITY OF BRAMPTON BEGINS CONSTRUCTION
ON CASSIE CAMPBELL COMMUNITY CENTRE
The City of Brampton broke
ground on the Cassie Campbell
Community Centre, named after
hometown hero Cassie Campbell,
a three-time Olympian and former
Captain of Canada's National
Women's Team.
The Cassie Campbell
Community Centre, located at
Sandalwood Parkway and
Chinguacousy Road, will be the
City's largest community centre at
165,000 square feet. When construction
is complete in the Fall of
2008, the centre will include a
citywide fitness centre, figure
skating rink, hockey rink and
pool.
"It is truly a surreal moment
for me to have a community centre
in my hometown named after
me," said Cassie Campbell. "I still
am pinching myself at the thought
of it all. Growing up in Brampton
and participating in many sports
and going to many community
centres I know first hand how
important this building will be
especially for our youth, and for
that I am extremely proud."
Campbell, 32, who retired
from competitive hockey in
August of 2006 is the only
Canadian hockey player, male or
female, to captain two Canadian
teams to Olympic gold medals.
Most recently, she became the
first female to work as a game
analyst for Hockey Night in
Canada.
"Cassie was born and raised in
Brampton. She is a hometown
hero," said Brampton Mayor
Susan Fennell. "She is proud of
her Brampton roots and we are so
proud to have her name associated
with this world class community
centre."
The Cassie Campbell
Community Centre will feature an
extensive outdoor program with
tennis courts, basketball courts,
splash pads, three outdoor soccer
fields, with two fields converting
to a cricket pitch, and a neighbourhood
park.
In addition to these features,
there will be an indoor running
track, a community police centre,
community meeting rooms and
the City's first community gymnasium.
Residents who use the new
community centre will have
access to a broad range of athletic
and leisure services.
"With so many features located
in one facility, the Cassie
Campbell Community Centre will
have something for everyone,"
said Regional Councillor Paul
Palleschi. "I am confident it will
meet the healthy lifestyle and multicultural
needs our community."
"Through public information
sessions, residents have shared
their vision of what they want in a
recreation facility," said City
Councillor John Hutton.
"As a result, the City has collaborated
with the community to
create Brampton's newest and
most advanced recreational facility."
As part of its Making Great
Things Happen initiative, City
Council has approved more than
$120 million in funding over the
next two years to construct two
new community centres, the
Cassie Campbell Community
Centre and the Brampton Soccer
Centre, and modernize two centres
built in the 1970s, the
Earnscliffe Recreation Centre and
Century Gardens Recreation
Centre.
