CITY OF BRAMPTON BEGINS CONSTRUCTION<br />

ON CASSIE CAMPBELL COMMUNITY CENTRE<br />

The City of Brampton broke<br />

ground on the Cassie Campbell<br />

Community Centre, named after<br />

hometown hero Cassie Campbell,<br />

a three-time Olympian and former<br />

Captain of Canada's National<br />

Women's Team.<br />

The Cassie Campbell<br />

Community Centre, located at<br />

Sandalwood Parkway and<br />

Chinguacousy Road, will be the<br />

City's largest community centre at<br />

165,000 square feet. When construction<br />

is complete in the Fall of<br />

2008, the centre will include a<br />

citywide fitness centre, figure<br />

skating rink, hockey rink and<br />

pool.<br />

"It is truly a surreal moment<br />

for me to have a community centre<br />

in my hometown named after<br />

me," said Cassie Campbell. "I still<br />

am pinching myself at the thought<br />

of it all. Growing up in Brampton<br />

and participating in many sports<br />

and going to many community<br />

centres I know first hand how<br />

important this building will be<br />

especially for our youth, and for<br />

that I am extremely proud."<br />

Campbell, 32, who retired<br />

from competitive hockey in<br />

August of 2006 is the only<br />

Canadian hockey player, male or<br />

female, to captain two Canadian<br />

teams to Olympic gold medals.<br />

Most recently, she became the<br />

first female to work as a game<br />

analyst for Hockey Night in<br />

Canada.<br />

"Cassie was born and raised in<br />

Brampton. She is a hometown<br />

hero," said Brampton Mayor<br />

Susan Fennell. "She is proud of<br />

her Brampton roots and we are so<br />

proud to have her name associated<br />

with this world class community<br />

centre."<br />

Community Centre will feature an<br />

extensive outdoor program with<br />

tennis courts, basketball courts,<br />

splash pads, three outdoor soccer<br />

fields, with two fields converting<br />

to a cricket pitch, and a neighbourhood<br />

park.<br />

In addition to these features,<br />

there will be an indoor running<br />

track, a community police centre,<br />

community meeting rooms and<br />

the City's first community gymnasium.<br />

Residents who use the new<br />

community centre will have<br />

access to a broad range of athletic<br />

and leisure services.<br />

"With so many features located<br />

in one facility, the Cassie<br />

Campbell Community Centre will<br />

have something for everyone,"<br />

said Regional Councillor Paul<br />

Palleschi. "I am confident it will<br />

meet the healthy lifestyle and multicultural<br />

needs our community."<br />

"Through public information<br />

sessions, residents have shared<br />

their vision of what they want in a<br />

recreation facility," said City<br />

Councillor John Hutton.<br />

"As a result, the City has collaborated<br />

with the community to<br />

create Brampton's newest and<br />

most advanced recreational facility."<br />

As part of its Making Great<br />

Things Happen initiative, City<br />

Council has approved more than<br />

$120 million in funding over the<br />

next two years to construct two<br />

new community centres, the<br />

Cassie Campbell Community<br />

Centre and the Brampton Soccer<br />

Centre, and modernize two centres<br />

built in the 1970s, the<br />

Earnscliffe Recreation Centre and<br />

Century Gardens Recreation<br />

Centre.<br />
