Raptors
Former
Raptor,
V i n c e
Carter
returned to
the Air Canada Centre this past
Sunday, to a mere 13,331 fans.
The former franchise player
watched as the, new and
improved, Raptors took the court
with an air of confidence. With
two wins under their belt, the
Raptors looked to continue their
success versus the New Jersey
Nets.
One of the newest Raptors, P.J.
Tucker led his team to a 119-110
victory. With Chris Bosh on the
bench; due to a foot injury; Tucker
was able to drop 18 points. This
first year player showed a lot of
grit and determination, providing
toughness and energy, which is
something the Raptors lacked last
season. "This kid just battles. And
he knows how to score around the
basket. That's the thing we liked
about him,'' Raptors head coach
Sam Mitchell said of Tucker, who
was the 35th pick in the 2006
draft. Fred Jones added 14 points
while Morris Peterson netted 13
points. T.J. Ford, Toronto's new
point guard, looked more confident;
scoring 10 points and getting
11 assists. Overall, the Raptors
looked extremely driven and
focused.
The Raptors took their 3-0
record into their game versus
Cleveland on Wednesday night.
The game, which was played in
Rochester, was the first time the
Raptors had a chance to see
Lebron James; however, he did
not play despite being healthy.
In the first half, the Raps were
able to take the lead, and hold it
until halftime, 49-45. In the second
half, the Cavaliers were able
to take a slight lead early in the
third quarter but the Raptors managed
to come back. And what a
comeback it was. At one point in
the third quarter, the Raptors were
up by as much as 11. Jorge
Garbajosa was on a mission, scoring,
at will, against a
"LeBronless" Cavaliers team.
In the fourth quarter, the
Raptors were able to push their
lead to an astounding 17 points;
"What a start!"
all this without
their stars Chris Bosh and Morris
Peterson. The Raps completely
dominated the Cavs in everyway.
Toronto was able to add to their
lead throughout the final frame
and looked determined to demolish
their opponents. With less
than 2 minutes left in the game,
the Raptors were up by 30 points!
The final was 103-81 in favor of
the Raptors.
WOW; highly impressive.
What a difference a year makes.
The 2006-2007 Toronto Raptors
are far from the team they were
last season. They have a winning
habit now. They have not taken a
game off in this preseason. They
have been impressive from the
start. One can only wonder if this
is the start of great things for our
basketball team.
The Raptors will be in town to
take on the same Cleveland
Cavaliers on Sunday before ending
the preseason with two games
against the Boston Celtics and the
Chicago Bulls. Both the Celtics
and Bulls games will be played
away.
"Mats Fantastic"
Toronto Maple Leafs Captain, Mats
Sundin recorded his 500th goal of his career
when he scored in an overtime game versus
the Calgary Flames, last Saturday. This
milestone was made even more exciting
because it was part of a "hat trick". Sundin
scored three times in the game versus
Calgary, to help the Leafs improve to 3-1-2.
The goal came in overtime while the Leafs
were killing a power play. Sundin moved
out of his own zone with the puck and took
a "mean" slap shot, which fooled the
Flames' goaltender. It was a spectacular
way to end the night; with an overtime win,
and reaching a milestone.
"Certainly, I'm proud of the accomplishment,
and it makes it special the way it happened''
the 35-year-old star centre said after
the game. "`More than anything, it's nice to
get it over with. I didn't want it to go 15 or
20 games into the season and still be looking
for it.''
The Toronto faithful stayed to salute
their leader as he took several laps around
the ice. It was nice to see that a man of
Sundin's talent was so moved by the reaction
of the fans. It was also nice to see that
the fans had some class in sticking around.
Could this be the start of many good things
for the Maple Leafs? We will have to wait
and see.The celebration continued on
Wednesday as the Leafs hosted the
Colorado Avalanche at the Air Canada
Centre. The Leafs began the game on the
right foot; scoring the opening goal in the
first three minutes of the first period. The
Avalanche answered quickly and tied the
game at 1-1.
The second period the Leafs seemed to
have taken the lead but the referee said that
he blew the whistle before the puck
crossed the line. A few minutes later, the
Leafs looked like they had scored again but
this time it was waved off due to a high
stick infraction. The Leafs didn't let the set
backs bring them down, they continued to
work hard along the boards and push the
play forward. Andrew Raycroft looked
solid in the net for the Leafs; making some
spectacular saves to help his team stay in
the game. However, the Avalanche managed
to score a "soft" goal, on a strange
play, to take the lead. The Leafs did not let
this discourage them a bit. They continued
to press in the offensive zone but couldn't
capitalize on their chances. The second
period ended with the score 2-1 in favor of
the Avalanche.
In the final period, the Avalanche added
to their lead. Andrew Raycroft found himself
very busy in this period as the Toronto
defense struggled. Defensive breakdowns
allowed the Avalanche to take a commanding
4-1 lead, late in the third period. It was a
big win for the Avalanche and a disappointing
loss for the Leafs.
The Toronto Maples Leafs will be in
action tonight against the Columbus Blue
Jackets and tomorrow against the New York
Rangers. Next week, the Leafs will have
back-to-back games versus the Ottawa
Senators. The first will be held here in
Toronto while the second will be in Ottawa
on Thursday.
