Lena Barreto
Awarded with the Diamond Jubilee Medal
On Saturday night, at
the Luso Canadian
Charitable Society’s
Sixth Annual Fundraising
Gala, Lena Barreto was also
awarded with the Diamond
Jubilee Medal. Ms. Barreto
has been volunteering at
Luso Canadian Charitable
Society for about eight years
and she sits on the board of
directors. The presentation
was a surprise to Ms.Barreto.
“Although this presentation was a
surprise to Lena, it was no surprise to
any of us that she should receive this
prestigious medal. She has earned this
through her hard work and dedication
to the community.”
The mother of two earned a number
of awards including Mississauga
Local Heroes Award in 2000,
Volunteer Award from City of
Mississauga in 2004, RBC's National
Top Performer in 2010, RBC's
Community Spirit Award in 2011 and
Charles Sousa awarded
Diamond Jubilees to 5
outstanding members
of the Portuguese
Community.
2012 marks the 60th anniversary
of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s
accession to the throne.
To celebrate this Diamond Jubilee,
Ontario is presenting over 2,000 outstanding
Ontarians with Diamond
Jubilee Medals. 5 of these medals will
be presented today at a private ceremony
at the Legislative Assembly of
Ontario. These recipients have made
extraordinary contributions to our
community and our province. They
make Ontario a better place to live.
The 5 recipients were:
Frank Alvarez
Francisco Sestelo Alvarez immigrated
to Canada in 1967 and became a
media icon. He is President and CEO
of CIRV RADIO 88.9 FM
the list continues.
MPP Damerla said that giving out
the medals and getting to know the
recipients is one of her favourite parts
in her role as an MPP.
“It’s a privilege for me to present

Festival Portuguese Television.
Antonio Belas
Antonio Belas came to Canada as a
young man in the 1970s and over the
years has shown all his skill as a successful
businessman.
Born in Cheleiros, Mafra, into a family
of food merchants, Antonio Belas,
owner of Ferma Importers, has built
an empire of success in the import and
distribution of Portuguese food products
with over 60 employees in
Toronto and Montreal.
José Maria Eustáquio
For the last 15 years Joe has held the
volunteer position of Executive
President of the Alliance of
Portuguese Clubs & Associations of
Ontario, as well as the Volunteer Chair
of the Annual Portugal Week
Celebrations.
Portugal Week has become the largest
event Portuguese Cultural event in
Canada and has been instrumental in
the celebration of Ontario’s diversity.
This would not have been possible
without Joe’s hard work, tireless commitment
and constant dedication.
Just this past year, Joe was honoured
by the Government of Portugal by
these medals to such dedicated individuals.
The world is a better place
because of people like Lena. It’s a
small token of thanks for the big contribution
they make,” says MPP

Jack Prazeres
Jack Prazeres is a successful entrepreneur
and businessman who believes in
giving back to the community.
Nowhere is this more evident than the
five million dollar Luso Canadian
Charitable Society Centre that provides
support services to those with
physical or developmental disabilities.
Jack also served as the Volunteer
Chair of the Carassauga Festival of
Cultures for 3 years and the Present of
the Portuguese Cultural Centre of
Mississauga for 2 years.
Wilson Teixeira
Wilson Teixeira is an entrepreneur
with a passion for languages and
world affairs. He has established and
runs a number of successful companies
in the language, transportation,
marketing and technology sectors,
including Able Translations, Able
Transport and WDM Marketing.
Wilson’s businesses across Canada
have grown to have an international
presence, with offices in Europe and
Asia.
