Awar<strong>de</strong>d with the Diamond Jubilee Medal<br />
On Saturday night, at<br />
the Luso Canadian<br />
Charitable Society’s<br />
Sixth Annual Fundraising<br />
Gala, Lena Barreto was also<br />
awar<strong>de</strong>d with the Diamond<br />
Jubilee Medal. Ms. Barreto<br />
has been volunteering at<br />
Luso Canadian Charitable<br />
Society for about eight years<br />
and she sits on the board of<br />
directors. The presentation<br />
was a surprise to Ms.Barreto.<br />
“Although this presentation was a<br />
surprise to Lena, it was no surprise to<br />
any of us that she should receive this<br />
prestigious medal. She has earned this<br />
through her hard work and <strong>de</strong>dication<br />
to the community.”<br />
The mother of two earned a number<br />
of awards including Mississauga<br />
Local Heroes Award in 2000,<br />
Volunteer Award from City of<br />
Mississauga in 2004, RBC's National<br />
Top Performer in 2010, RBC's<br />
Community Spirit Award in 2011 and<br />
Charles Sousa awar<strong>de</strong>d<br />
Diamond Jubilees to 5<br />
outstanding members<br />
of the Portuguese<br />
Community.<br />
<strong>2012</strong> marks the 60th anniversary<br />
of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s<br />
accession to the throne.<br />
To celebrate this Diamond Jubilee,<br />
Ontario is presenting over 2,000 outstanding<br />
Ontarians with Diamond<br />
Jubilee Medals. 5 of these medals will<br />
be presented today at a private ceremony<br />
at the Legislative Assembly of<br />
Ontario. These recipients have ma<strong>de</strong><br />
extraordinary contributions to our<br />
community and our province. They<br />
make Ontario a better place to live.<br />
The 5 recipients were:<br />
Frank Alvarez<br />
Francisco Sestelo Alvarez immigrated<br />
to Canada in 1967 and became a<br />
media icon. He is Presi<strong>de</strong>nt and CEO<br />
of CIRV RADIO 88.9 FM<br />
the list continues.<br />
MPP Damerla said that giving out<br />
the medals and getting to know the<br />
recipients is one of her favourite parts<br />
in her role as an MPP.<br />
“It’s a privilege for me to present<br />
Multicultural Radio and FPTV<br />
Festival Portuguese Television.<br />
Antonio Belas<br />
Antonio Belas came to Canada as a<br />
young man in the 1970s and over the<br />
years has shown all his skill as a successful<br />
businessman.<br />
Born in Cheleiros, Mafra, into a family<br />
of food merchants, Antonio Belas,<br />
owner of Ferma Importers, has built<br />
an empire of success in the import and<br />
distribution of Portuguese food products<br />
with over 60 employees in<br />
Toronto and Montreal.<br />
José Maria Eustáquio<br />
For the last 15 years Joe has held the<br />
volunteer position of Executive<br />
Presi<strong>de</strong>nt of the Alliance of<br />
Portuguese Clubs & Associations of<br />
Ontario, as well as the Volunteer Chair<br />
of the Annual Portugal Week<br />
Celebrations.<br />
Portugal Week has become the largest<br />
event Portuguese Cultural event in<br />
Canada and has been instrumental in<br />
the celebration of Ontario’s diversity.<br />
This would not have been possible<br />
without Joe’s hard work, tireless commitment<br />
and constant <strong>de</strong>dication.<br />
Just this past year, Joe was honoured<br />
by the Government of Portugal by<br />
these medals to such <strong>de</strong>dicated individuals.<br />
The world is a better place<br />
because of people like Lena. It’s a<br />
small token of thanks for the big contribution<br />
they make,” says MPP<br />

Jack Prazeres<br />
Jack Prazeres is a successful entrepreneur<br />
and businessman who believes in<br />
giving back to the community.<br />
Nowhere is this more evi<strong>de</strong>nt than the<br />
five million dollar Luso Canadian<br />
Charitable Society Centre that provi<strong>de</strong>s<br />
support services to those with<br />
physical or <strong>de</strong>velopmental disabilities.<br />
Jack also served as the Volunteer<br />
Chair of the Carassauga Festival of<br />
Cultures for 3 years and the Present of<br />
the Portuguese Cultural Centre of<br />
Mississauga for 2 years.<br />
Wilson Teixeira<br />
Wilson Teixeira is an entrepreneur<br />
with a passion for languages and<br />
world affairs. He has established and<br />
runs a number of successful companies<br />
in the language, transportation,<br />
marketing and technology sectors,<br />
including Able Translations, Able<br />
Transport and WDM Marketing.<br />
Wilson’s businesses across Canada<br />
have grown to have an international<br />
presence, with offices in Europe and<br />
Asia.
