Quanto à viabilidade clínica, deve-se ressaltar que não podemos deixar de pensar no custo/benefício desses materiais, equilibrando o nosso cotidiano com a realidade econômica e social em que estamos inseridos como profissionais. CONCLUSÃO: Não há dúvida de que a Engenharia Tecidual tem o enorme potencial de contribuir significativamente com a sociedade na próxima década. Numerosas técnicas já foram testadas na tentativa de se regenerar tecidos perdidos pela doença periodontal. O sucesso, na maioria das vezes, depende muito do conhecimento acerca da biologia do processo regenerativo. O próximo passo em tecnologias regenerativas será envolver conhecimento mais profundo de sinalização molecular (intra e extracelular) e mecanismos de diferenciação celular nos processos regenerativos. ABSTRACT The main goal of periodontal therapy must be the structural and functional rehabilitation of the lost tissues due to the periodontal disease, resulting in repair and formation of new periodontal attachment (new bone, cementum and periodontal ligament). Regeneration depends on the proliferation, migration, differentiation and production of extracellular protein matrix. Tissue engineering is an emerging multidisciplinary field defined as the application of the concepts of engineering, chemistry and biology aiming repair, restoration or regeneration of tissues. The aim of this literature review is to discuss principles and methods of engineering tissues for periodontal regeneration emphasizing on cell therapy, as well as to show the state of the art in this field and to present the future directions in Dentistry.
