The purpose of this paper was to develop the principles and criteria for identifi cation, classifi
cation and mapping of the landscape systems of the Middle Prut River Plain, a territorial
unit which has a considerable landscape diversity. The methodology for analysis of landscapes
as systemic units is based on identifi cation of geographical spatial structures. Remote sensing
techniques were used as a means for analysis. The identifi cation and mapping of landscapes
was done by modeling of environmental components, and the modeling results were integrated
into a geographic information system. The limits of landscape units were traced mainly along
the thalwegs of the valleys, riverbeds or limits of fl oodplain and river terraces. In addition, the
boundaries were drawn at interfl uvial peaks and saddles, in both cases taking into account the
characteristics of soil, geologic substrate, land cover, etc.

ASSESSMENT OF WASTE IMPACT ON THE CHISINAU URBAN ECOSYSTEM

The research on the relation between the pollutant mass contained in the Bic River water
and its volume has resulted in establishment of a regularity due to which the pollutant mass
introduced to the city by the Bic River water, discharges to the river from the Chisinau City surface,
and the water volume evacuated from the urban area depend on the water volume, while it
correlates with the atmospheric precipitation amount. The studies on the negative waste impact,
assessed by determination of the fl oristic algae diversity according to Margalef allowed the establishment
of a regularity of the dependence of this index on the pollution degree in the section
investigated. The studies on the negative waste impact on ecosystems revealed a regularity of
the dependence of the negative impact value on the pollution level in this section.
