Bodrum the Region of Tourism
“City of Gladiators” is coming to light
Ministry of Culture and Tourism carried
out a project about the archaeological
excavations have been done in 20 ancient
cities and archaeological sites throughout
one year. The new works are coming
to light in the studies performed in the
ancient city of Stratonikeia, also known
as the “City of Gladiators”. Head of the
excavation and Pamukkale University,
Faculty of Science and Literature,
Department of Archeology Lecturar Prof.
Dr. Bilal Söğüt said that in Yatağan district
of Muğla they have found findings
which belongs to a settlement of 3500
years ago and that they have reached the
ruins of many periods of history in the
ancient city.
Professor Dr. Söğüt emphasized that
Stratonikeia was in the UNESCO Cultural
Heritage Temporary List by drawing
attention to the ancient city's being the
largest marble city in the world, which also
continued its importance in the Hellenistic,
Wind contribute to tourism
in Bodrum
Bodrum, one of Turkey's most important tourism centers, is contributing
to tourism with its wind as well as its sea and sun by welcoming
sailors between the months of September-May. Bodrum district
of Muğla, which is preferred by tourists due to its entertainment
industry, natural, historical and cultural values as well as its sea,
sand and sun in summer months, offers various opportunities for
sailing sports enthusiasts, especially in its windy weather.

Ottoman and Republic periods.Söğüt,
who explained that they have reached
significant information every year in the
excavations in the city, said that with the
project which will lead to the showing up
of archaeological values, the excavations
will be carried out for 12 months with the
support of the Ministry of Culture and
Tourism.
FROM BRONZE AGE TO TODAY
Bilal Söğüt stating that all grave samples
from the Bronze Age to the present day
will be exhibited in the newly created necropolis
area and there will be informative
plaques, continued as follows: “There are
gladiator graves on one side, terra-cotta
samples from every period and tombs
built from stones. So, here we will exhibit
in groups the gladiators' on one side, the
archaic tombs on the other side and the
necropolis area of the tombs belonging to
the Byzantines on the other.”
From September to the last days of the May, sailing races can be
done in different categories on Bodrum offshore. In the organized
races, wind-filled sails in Bodrum create colorful images. With the
Turkey Sailing Federation's (TYF) and different clubs' organizations,
many domestic and foreign sailors are coming to the region.
Children sporters are accompanied by their coaches and their
families. Some of the sailing races that have positive effect on the
tourism mobility in the district at winter and which is important in
terms of sports tourism can be easily watched from the shore.
SAILING IS A VERY SPECIAL VEHICLE
TYF Deputy Chairman CeyhunÜstüner, indicated that sailing is
very important in terms of winter tourism and continued as follows:
“The development and support of sailing is very important
for winter tourism. Bodrum is one of the most important centers
in this matter. It is very important to organize the races frequently
and increase the number of participation from foreign
countries. Especially in the winter, sailing sport is a very special
vehicle for that.”
