Bodrum the Region of Tourism<br />
“City of Gladiators” is coming to light<br />
Ministry of Culture and Tourism carried<br />
out a project about the archaeological<br />
excavations have been done in 20 ancient<br />
cities and archaeological sites throughout<br />
one year. The new works are coming<br />
to light in the studies performed in the<br />
ancient city of Stratonikeia, also known<br />
as the “City of Gladiators”. Head of the<br />
excavation and Pamukkale University,<br />
Faculty of Science and Literature,<br />
Department of Archeology Lecturar Prof.<br />
Dr. Bilal Söğüt said that in Yatağan district<br />
of Muğla they have found findings<br />
which belongs to a settlement of 3500<br />
years ago and that they have reached the<br />
ruins of many periods of history in the<br />
ancient city.<br />
Professor Dr. Söğüt emphasized that<br />
Stratonikeia was in the UNESCO Cultural<br />
Heritage Temporary List by drawing<br />
attention to the ancient city's being the<br />
largest marble city in the world, which also<br />
continued its importance in the Hellenistic,<br />
Wind contribute to tourism<br />
in Bodrum<br />
Bodrum, one of Turkey's most important tourism centers, is contributing<br />
to tourism with its wind as well as its sea and sun by welcoming<br />
sailors between the months of September-May. Bodrum district<br />
of Muğla, which is preferred by tourists due to its entertainment<br />
industry, natural, historical and cultural values as well as its sea,<br />
sand and sun in summer months, offers various opportunities for<br />
sailing sports enthusiasts, especially in its windy weather.<br />
Roman, Byzantine, Anatolian Principalities,<br />
Ottoman and Republic periods.Söğüt,<br />
who explained that they have reached<br />
significant information every year in the<br />
excavations in the city, said that with the<br />
project which will lead to the showing up<br />
of archaeological values, the excavations<br />
will be carried out for 12 months with the<br />
support of the Ministry of Culture and<br />
Tourism.<br />
FROM BRONZE AGE TO TODAY<br />
Bilal Söğüt stating that all grave samples<br />
from the Bronze Age to the present day<br />
will be exhibited in the newly created necropolis<br />
area and there will be informative<br />
plaques, continued as follows: “There are<br />
gladiator graves on one side, terra-cotta<br />
samples from every period and tombs<br />
built from stones. So, here we will exhibit<br />
in groups the gladiators' on one side, the<br />
archaic tombs on the other side and the<br />
necropolis area of the tombs belonging to<br />
the Byzantines on the other.”<br />
From September to the last days of the May, sailing races can be<br />
done in different categories on Bodrum offshore. In the organized<br />
races, wind-filled sails in Bodrum create colorful images. With the<br />
Turkey Sailing Federation's (TYF) and different clubs' organizations,<br />
many domestic and foreign sailors are coming to the region.<br />
Children sporters are accompanied by their coaches and their<br />
families. Some of the sailing races that have positive effect on the<br />
tourism mobility in the district at winter and which is important in<br />
terms of sports tourism can be easily watched from the shore.<br />
SAILING IS A VERY SPECIAL VEHICLE<br />
TYF Deputy Chairman CeyhunÜstüner, indicated that sailing is<br />
very important in terms of winter tourism and continued as follows:<br />
“The development and support of sailing is very important<br />
for winter tourism. Bodrum is one of the most important centers<br />
in this matter. It is very important to organize the races frequently<br />
and increase the number of participation from foreign<br />
countries. Especially in the winter, sailing sport is a very special<br />
vehicle for that.”<br />
