Psychologist Gizem Sürenkök
In the recovery process of the big earthquake that
affected 11 cities, Psychologist Gizem Sürenkök
explained what needs to be done to overcome the
psychological effects of the disaster.
Severe earthquakes of 7.7 and 7.6 magnitudes centered
in Kahramanmaraş shook Türkiye deeply. While the whole
country is mobilizing to help the people of the region
affected by the incident, the repercussions of the great
disaster are sadly followed by the television.
Pointing out that a process of social trauma was entered in
this period and it was necessary to be united, Psychologist
Gizem Sürenkök said, “In such periods, first of all, we feel
emotions such as fear, anxiety, anger, helplessness, haste,
inadequacy, and injustice. Our perception that our lives
are under our control is damaged. We may believe that
we do not have the strength to resist external influences
or that we will never feel good again. Although all these
negative feelings are very human, we need to listen to
the feeling of struggle, the desire for solidarity, and the
need to help others. I think we all have these positive and
strong emotions. We just have to choose which one to
listen to more.
Wounds will take a serious time to heal, there is no point
in denying that. This is a huge and widespread disaster
and a lot of people have been affected. I think we all know
someone who lives in that area, it’s such a big area. Even
if it’s not the common human experience, we can feel
how distressed they are. We really have to act together
to heal. We all have a function in life, for example, I can
help people cope better with their negative emotions.
Someone else is supplying a product. We have those who
heal animals, we have those who treat people, we have
those who provide education. We can all be useful; we
can hold one end. Let’s just do this together. Because,
unfortunately, individual efforts are not enough in such
large-scale disasters. We have to act jointly, gain strength
from each other, and work in an organized manner. We
have to complement each other’s weaknesses and find
strength from their strengths. In this way, we will all get
better together.”
Yeter
ki bunu birlikte yapalım. Çünkü bu kadar büyük çaplı
afetlerde bireysel çabalar maalesef yeterli olmuyor. Ortak
hareket etmek, birbirimizden güç almak, organize bir
şekilde çalışmak zorundayız. Birbirimizin zayıf yanlarını
tamamlamak, güçlü yanlarından güç bulmak zorundayız.
