INVESTIGATION ON THE MORPHOLOGICAL-PHYSIOLOGICAL
CHARACTERISTICS OF SILVER FIR (ABIES ALBA MILL.) POLLEN
IN CONNECTION WITH ITS HYBRIDIZATION
Summary
Very scanty studies on the biology and physiology of the pollen of Silver Fir
(Abies Alba Mill.) prompted us to pay special attention to this question, and to
determine what are the differences as to the size and shape of Fir pollen grains.
In this connexion we were especially concerned with finding out the method of
preserving the pollen for as long as possible, achieving at the some time a good
germination. We likewise investigated the germination of pollen under various
environmental conditions (»in vitro«). All these studies are closely connected to the
hybridization of Fir.
1. It was established that the pollen collected from violet male inflorescences
are characterized by larger dimensions in comparison with pollen from yellow and
intermediate inflorescences (Tabs. 1 and 2), which suggests the existence of lower
systematic categories within the Abie alba species. The same differences were noted
also in border values (Tab. 3), which implies that also the variability in the pollen
from the violet inflorescences is larger.
The dimensions of the pollen grains between individual trees in a population
also waried. Greater fluctuations were noticed in trees with a violet pigmentation
of male inflorescences.
