EditorialIn his pioneering monograph, Yuri N. Karogodin professionally used a systemapproach (and even system philosophy) to describe for the first time the theoreticaland methodological principles of a new science he called LITHMOLOGY. AcademicianV. V. Menner and Corresponding Member of the RAS N. B. Vassoevich proposed asimilar (and maybe more precise term) - LITHOMOLOGY. The name is not veryimportant. The essence is that this science is very promising. Philosophers andmethodologists (S. S. Rozova, L. A. Simanov, and some others) believe that lithmologyis an integrating discipline of geology. Geologist I. P. Sharapov (a bullet-proof logicianas characterized by N. B. Vassoevich) called lithmology a “bonanza” of geology.Karogodin consistently applies rules, principles, and particular laws of lithmologyto stratigraphy, the basis of geology. His theory and methodology are lacking only thefinal part - lithmogenesis. But it seems very likely that this section will be prepared inthe foreseeable future. The author’s proposals are not simply a play of intellect havingno application, and this is very important as all ideas and conceptions of geologistswill, sooner or later, be proved in practice. It is due to the success of geosciences thatRussia is one of the economically leading nations of the world. This success was muchcontributed by petroleum geologists, and one of them was Yuri N. Karogodin awardedtop national prizes (State Prize of the Russian Federation, the title Deserved Prospectorfrom the Ministry for Natural Resources, Vernadsky Silver Medal and Trofimuk Medalfrom the Academy of Sciences). The author deserved these awards for he had madeimportant discoveries and his forecasts had been proved. What is made by Karogodin is aimed at the future. Some of his forecasts wereahead the time and had been realized many years later. We mention here only some ofhis studies and related implications. He predicted the Tazgas deposit, the first largest deposit in the Polar West Siberia, and participated in testing the wells. He insisted on taking an extra core from a well onone of the areas of the Krasnoleninsk dome. The core appeared to be oil-saturated. Itturned out that the whole huge dome is “filled up” with Aptian oil. On the YamalPeninsula the Aptian deposits form the main complex with giant resources of gascondensate concentrated in the Tanopcha Formation distinguished by Karogodin. Hesupposed that a giant sleeve-shaped dendroid oil pool of the Talinskoe deposit exist inthe Lower Jurassic deposits of the Mansi syneclise of West Siberia, but this forecastwaited ten years to be proved. At the same time, many working groups searching forchannel-type deposits like the Talinskoe one have not yet been successful. Now he triesto substantiate the presence of another similar (stratigraphie, channel) field, and I amsure it will be discovered in less than ten years. Karogodin also predicted two largestratigraphie oil- and gas-bearing zones in East Siberia, which are to be proved. Hemodeled the giant Ob’ oil-bearing zone in the Hauterivian-Barremian deposits of centralWest Siberia, which yielded 60-65 % of the YUKOS production. The Samotino-Moregas condensate deposit was the first to be discovered on the Bulgarian shelf of theBlack Sea with his participation, after some failed efforts of other explorers.
