Qatar International
Medical Congress 2016
Qatar International Medical Congress (QIMC), a one-of-a-kind exhibition
which brings together the most established companies and experts in the health
and medical community, took place between 18-20 May in Qatar’s continuous
attempt to improve the medical sector.
The congress focused on several
areas including hospital
equipment supplies, diagnostics,
pharmaceuticals, sports, medical
and rehabilitation. Held in Doha Exhibition
and Convention Center (DECC), QIMC
2016 incorporated for the first time a Health
and Beauty section, showcasing local,
regional and international health and beauty
establishments ranging from cosmetics
to medical spas. This new addition was
established “to target new business and
build relationships with health and beauty
professionals from the public and private
sectors,” as stated on QIMC’s official website.
Background
As part of Qatar National Vision 2030,
under the Human Development umbrella,
healthcare improvement is essential. Health is
a primary factor which affects the productive
capabilities of the population. A society
that provides a safe, accessible and effective
healthcare system to their population will
create much room for improvement and
development among itself.
With this in mind, the inaugural QIMC
was created in 2015, successfully boasting
150 exhibitors and attracting around 8,000
visitors. QIMC has provided a foundation
for the development of a medical industry
in Qatar as well as for other businesses that
thrive on the success of this industry by
creating a market in which foreign investors
can interact directly with local and regional
business.
QIMC was created under the patronage of
His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser
bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar Prime Minister
and Minister of Interior. Among its many
strategic partners, QIMC 2016 is allied with
prominent organizations such as the Ministry
of Public Health, Hamad Medical Corporation,
and Primary Health Care Corporation.

This year, the three-day medical congress
was held to provide an opportunity for
medical industry experts to interact and
discuss the latest technological advancements
within their industry. The congress started
with an official inauguration by Dr. Hanan
Mohammed Al Kuwari, Minister of Public
Health.
Renowned international and local experts
were invited to present and comment new
scientific findings. Among them was Professor
Johannes Schweizer, Vice President of Arbor
Vista in the United States, who discussed
how biomarkers affect the effectiveness of
cervical cancer screening. Dr. Sam Ali of
US-based Denka, a chemical company, gave

a talk on advancing microbial diagnostics
technologies to improve detection and patient
outcome. Dr. Micheal Aupetit touched on the
Qatar Genome Project as he spoke of Visual
Analytics on the 1000 Genome Project.
In the exhibition hall, booths were
divided into strategic sections in which
medical companies were able to connect and
network with businesses of similar interests.
Exhibitors ranged from medical research
organizations such as Qatar Cancer Society, to
medical centers and beauty facilities such as
Bronzage Spa.
