CORNEILLE: HIS VERY LAST ART PIECE The legendary Dutch painter Corneille has contributed with three elephants to Elephant Parade. His third elephant, named ‘Blue’, became his very last piece of art before he died. Corneille Guillaume Beverloo was born 4th of July 1922 in Liége, Belgium. At the age of 21, he was accepted into the Amsterdam Art Academy, and in 1946 he held his first solo exhibition in Groningen, The Netherlands. Corneille was part of the European avant-garde movement COBRA, which was active from 1949 to 1951. The name of the movement was created by Christian Dotremont from the first letters in the name of the member’s hometowns: Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. COBRA was established on 8th November 1948 in Paris at Hotel Notre Dames café, where six artists signed a short declaration written by the founding member Christian Dotremont. The declaration took a stand against the manifest signed by French and Belgic revolutionary surrealists the year before. The COBRA declaration was signed by Christian Dotremont, Joseph Noiret, Asger Jorn, Karel Appel, Constant og Corneille. In the beginning, COBRA involved only artists from the Danish group ‘Høst’, the Dutch group ‘Reflex’ and the Belgic Revolutionary Surrealistic Group, but later on it spread to other countries. Corneille painted his first elephant in 2009 for Elephant Parade Amsterdam and the second one for Elephant Parade London in 2010. The third and last one was painted for Elephant Parade Copenhagen in 2010. Later the same year, on 5th of September 2010, Corneille died in Auvers-sur-Oise in France, 88 years old. Thus Corneille’s third elephant became his very last piece of art. After Corneille’s death, Elephant Parade honoured him with a tribute during one of the auctions in the Dutch city Emmen. His beautiful and colourful elephant was auctioned for an unprecedented 68.000 euro that evening in Holland and sold to a private art collector. The elephant has therefore never been on display in Denmark, but still counts as one of the many outstanding art elephants of Elephant Parade Copenhagen. ELEPHANTPARADE.DK
