CET throughout Europe. The Education
Committee of ECOO will continue
to supervise this work.
Freiburg Declaration
The optometric profession continues
to expand its scope of practice, driving
in particular towards the use of diagnostic
drugs in some countries.
Although the use of diagnostic drugs
by optometrists remains permitted in
only a handful of countries, representatives
from Germany, Austria and
Switzerland recently agreed that the
prescribing of diagnostic drugs
(among other things) was the way forward
for the profession in order to
meet the clinical needs of their patients.
Meeting in Freiburg, the representatives
issued a declaration on the
future of the profession. The text of
the so called Freiburg Declaration will
be published soon on ECOO’s website
in German and in English.
Recognition of ECOO Diploma
The General Optical Council, the regu-
latory body in the United Kingdom,
has confirmed that it continues to recognise
the ECOO European Diploma
in Optometry as a qualification which
partially meets the requirements for
registration to practise as an optometrist
in the UK. Full recognition will
depend on the portfolio of clinical
experience, which all candidates for
the Diploma will have to complete to
a satisfactory standard in order to be
awarded the Diploma (in addition
to passing the written and practical
exams of the Diploma).
