In recent years, the WU Executive Academy and almost all the<br />

academic institutions – from the universities and colleges, through<br />

semi-private providers such as the well-known Hernstein Institute and<br />

the WIFI International Network, to smaller players such as NGO specialist<br />

Upstairs Management and the Linz-based Limak Austrian Business<br />

School – have been battling it out for a knowledge-hungry management<br />

clientele who only view their success as secure when it is based on life-long<br />

learning, due to increasingly tough competition.<br />

‘Innovation and Adaptation’, the 2014 theme of the Vienna Chamber<br />

of Commerce’s Hernstein Institute for Management and Leadership,<br />

which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2016, is typical of this challenge.<br />

Its focus has been set by the Hernstein’s new director, Eva-Maria Ayberk,<br />

“to enhance the performance of companies and organisations”. “It is all<br />

about admitting, stretching, learning and implementing,” says Irene Karl<br />

of the Hernstein Institute. “We offer 70 to 75 basic programmes every year,<br />

each of which is participated in by an average of 200-300 managers,<br />

underlining our thematic leadership.”<br />

Focussing in this way has become crucial for the survival of players in<br />

the market for postgraduate management courses, a market which has<br />

grown exponentially in recent years. Sometimes this can be in the form of<br />

smaller providers concentrating on a sharply-defined specialist field, such<br />

as Viennese school ‘Upstairs Management’ and its new NGO Management<br />

course. The course, as trainer Wolfgang Hermann puts it, “is<br />

designed to familiarise managers of non-profit organisations with the<br />

language of the business world.” Alternatively, this focussing can be<br />

expressed by larger academic institutions consciously tightening up their<br />
