Jump on the city bus no. 389 at Palermo’s Piazza<br />
Indipendenza, and it won’t be long before you’re<br />
at Cathedral Square in the small town of Monreale,<br />
not quite ten kilometres outside Palermo. In this<br />
way, the bus links two of Sicily’s greatest tourist<br />
attractions. Piazza Indipendenza is home to the<br />
Palazzo dei Normanni, with its incomparable<br />
Cappella Palatina; the Byzantine mosaics here,<br />
which date back to the twelfth century, have their<br />
visitors in raptures. The Norman Cathedral of<br />
Monreale, meanwhile, is one of the most impressive<br />
mediaeval works of art and architecture anywhere in<br />
the world. The mosaic gracing the interior of the<br />
church covers more than 6,000 square metres, and<br />
shows scenes from the New and Old Testaments. The<br />
cloister of the mediaeval monastery, with its<br />
mosaic-covered pillars, is also well worth a look.<br />
