considered a waste product is today a valuable resource.
Supply and purchase agreements help provide a certain
planning security. And nonetheless, the waste water remains
the only reliable raw material of a purification plant.
It provides the carbon for the fermentation and contains
low-temperature heat.
Forward-looking gas utilisation is the basis for purposeful
heat production. For safety reasons, a waste water purification
plant has two independent heat production facilities,
either combined heat and power with a co-generation
plant or a gas turbine for electricity production with
the use of waste heat and an oil boiler for emergency and
peak-time supply. The heat deficit can also be covered by
the waste water heat pumps. The only problem is that to
cover the emergency supply requirement, i.e. 100% heat
supply, a large heat pump would have to be acquired that
more or less never operates. However, if the heat can be
sold to other consumers through a district heating grid, it
makes sense to use the waste water heat.
In large plants the option of processing the sewage gas
and feeding it into the natural gas grid has to be looked
at. The process heat for the fermentation would then,
however, have to be gained by burning natural gas, or
using heat pumps in the secondary clarification phase.
Solar cells for heating the fermentation tower are also a
creative alternative.
The investor, whether the operator of a waste water purification
plant or a contractor, who drives the construction of a
district heating network with end customers forwards would
secure itself a leading role in the heating business. Here a
differentiation is made between cold heating networks with
decentralised heat and cooling supply at each customer, and
a warm heating network with a central heating hub. Both versions
are possible, depending on what is most suited. In a
warm network, a heating hub can be erected centrally. It is
highly desirable that it be in or very near to the waste water
purification plant. Because this means that the operator of
the waste water purification plant retains the option of feeding
the extra heat into the network, and hence of using the
entire energy contained in the sewage gas.
