Bentley’s convertible –
the crème de la crème
Debating the practicality of a Bentley Continental GT
makes about as much sense as discussing the looks
of a film star: some things just have to be accepted as
a given.
very man should build a house, plant a tree, sire a
son, ... and drive a 12-cylinder. And anyone who is
setting out to prove the truth of this luxury version
of the old bible verse won’t be able to ignore a
Bentley for long. If he opts for the Continental GT Speed
Convertible, he will be the proud owner of the fastest
four-seater convertible in the world. Despite weighing
in at 2.5 tonnes, the Bentley takes just 4.1 seconds to
accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h and has a top speed of 327
km/h. What more could you possibly wish for? Apparently
quite a few highly paid American basketball stars love
their Continental GT more than their girlfriends. That’s
because, unlike a Ferrari, the headroom provided by
the fabric hood enables even a seven-foot giant to sit
upright. Of course, this much performance and comfort
comes at a price – and in Germany, that price starts at
€222,000. With a few useful extras, such as the carbonceramic
brakes that I’m familiar with from the Porsche
911 Turbo, my test car would have set me back a princely
€267,000. Even some of the dashboard elements on the
Bentley looked familiar, reminding me of my Audi SQ5.
That’s no coincidence: the iconic British brand, like Audi
and Porsche, is a subsidiary of the VW group. Thanks
to Bentley, VW has a foot in the door of film and sports
stars, not to mention royal families: a few days earlier, an
enthusiastic Scandinavian prince had apparently taken
my UK-registered test car for a spin. I have to admit that
I was also pretty impressed with the upper class racer –
even though, due to the winter tyres, I was unable to see
just how it fares at 300 km/h with the top down. And the
sumptuous scent of the leather interior quickly made me
forget the litres of fuel being guzzled under the bonnet.
But that’s not something that Bentley drivers need to
worry about in any case. www.bentleymotors.com •
