This is a cultural luxury that few cities can
boast of. The empty spaces behind the
Hauptbahnhof, Tempelhof, and spaces
further east should be considered like any
other cultural institution, spaces for the
imagination and phenomenological experiences
necessary to the human spirit.

Invaliden-Friedhof: Stan took me here in
1994. It was dark and cold. We passed easily
through a big black iron gate and walk
in among the headstones as it began to
snow. And I thought about Edgar Allan Poe
and Caspar David Friedrich. Cemeteries are
cultural spaces of contemplation, museums
of past lives.
