Weihnachtsbaumausstellung Christmas Tree Exhibition
How authentic must a Christmas tree be to create the anticipated emotional touch ? When
is it actually real and when should it be categorized as artificial or even banished to the cor-
ner of that will never do? O Christmas Tree! – quite a few consumers can tell a thing or two
about that. The HfG special exhibition Oh Tannenbaum! [O Christmas Tree] at the HfG atri-
ums at the end of December, however, also took Christmas tree interpretations to the extreme
in 2010. It was once again not only the favorite of the public, but also of the national press:
100 selected Christmas tree creations confronted by an extraordinary variety of a very different
understanding of the idea of a Christmas tree – an artistic Pre-X-Mas-Happening, which
challenged the Sunday paper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung to an editorial homage
filling a full page.
It was the seventh time that HfG alumni Johannes Marmon and Johannes Müller had invited
students, staff, and internationally renowned artists and designers to strip the leaves of
the icon of the Christmas tree. Far away from the traditional ideas of a Christmas tree, the
exhibition showed works out of rather unusual materials, as for example the ChapstickO-
ChristmasTree [Labellohtannenbaum] by Benedikt Meyer or the Cressmastree by Moritz
Jähde made out of cress. The students did not hold back their critical and cynical statements
either about celebrating X-mas: Rosa Pfeil and Yannik Nuss simply hacked the evergreen
