entire design and graphical representation of the event. Scenographic interventions in urban
space, performances, and spatial installations on the topic Unjust provoked a clear concept.
The participating students experienced a day in the life of an artist with all its possible
difficulties and successes in practice.
Black Box White Cube, a one-week performative exhibition in Leipzig in May, concluded one
year of theoretical and practical cooperation with two renowned universities in Leipzig,

HGB (Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig, Intermedia, class of Prof. Alba
d’Urbano) and HMT (University of Music and Theater, Leipzig, Dram-
aturgy, Prof. Barbara Büscher). It showed the re-
sults of free artistic works in their last stage of
development. A lecture series analyzed the topic
from different perspectives. In three groups or-
ganized by them, students from three different
departments and two different cities developed
highly original works and critically examined the
two art spaces, Black Box and White Cube.
Lectures on their works by scenographer Katrin
Brack (Vienna) and concept artists Res Ingold
(Munich) and Hans Winkler (Berlin) complement-
ed the program.
A long-planned excursion to the United States in
the spring semester in April marked, for the time
being, the end of our focus on illusion research.
It began with a historic view by visiting the ex-
cellent dioramas at the New York Museum of Nat-
ural History and the amusement park on Coney Island as an illusionary lab for structures in
urban development – Rem Kolhaas’s Delirious New York set the background. In Los Angeles
the historic yet modern Disneyland, the Warner Brother Studios, a visit to Jon Jerde’s studio,
the illusionary shopping malls developed by his office, and the Museum of Jurassic Technology
were to follow. We ended the trip in Las Vegas with its walkable film architecture of
illusionary worlds of experience.
Another topic in the spring semester 2011 was Space and Movement. After theoretical and
analytical preparation, a second excursion in June brought us to the South of France to the
Festival du Danse in Uzès to see several works by French choreographer Xavier le Roy. Intensive
discussions and performance exercises with the artist followed.
In July 2011, musician and composer Arto Lindsay (Sao Paulo/New York) and dancer and
choreographer Letizia Monea (Berlin) conducted the workshop Perception of Space. A final
performance showed the students dancing in the sound space.
At the annual exhibition, the free projects and performances of the artistic project seminar
Mobile Spaces taught by Beatrix von Pilgrim were presented.

Campaign: Bang! Scenography remains, or else…! – 2,000 red balloons, pins,
flyers HfG Atriums and corridors, ground floor to third floor Tuesday 28 to Wednesday 29
June 2011. The students in the Department of Scenography informed staff and students at the
university on the still unresolved situation regarding a new appointment for the professorial
position in the department vacant as of the fall semester 2011/12. Szeno bleibt! – jetzt knallt’s Bang!
