Beachtenswert war im vergangenen Jahr die Tendenz, über die Grenzen
der eigenen Fachdisziplin hinauszudenken und ihr damit neue Anwendungsbereiche
zu erschließen. So entwickelte Prof. Florian Pfeffer mit seinen Studierenden das Gourmet-
Label The Caterer Who Loved Me – Critical Cuisine, das sich dem Gedanken der Nachhaltigkeit
verschrieben hat und das bei der größten Design-Konferenz Europas, der Typo Berlin,
im Mai 2011 mit dem Kiosk Heldenimbiss bereits erfolgreich zum Einsatz gekommen ist.
Umfängliche Reiseaktivitäten sind aus allen Fachbereichen der HfG zu vermelden. Prof.
Armin Linke (Fotografie) fuhr mit seinen Studierenden auf die italienische Mittelmeerinsel
Lampedusa, um die dortige Flüchtlingssituation und deren mediale Verarbeitung einer
künstlerischen Feldforschung zu unterziehen. Prof. Anna Jermolaewa (Video) unternahm
eine Exkursion nach St. Petersburg, wo eine Gruppe HfG-Studierender im National Center
for Contemporary Arts (NCCA) eigene künstlerische Arbeiten präsentierte. Vertretungspro-
fessorin Bärbel Küster (Kunstwissenschaft) war mit Studenten im westafrikanischen Mali
und im Senegal unterwegs und dokumentierte die dortige Fotografen-Szene durch Inter-
views und Videos.
Von den vielen Erfolgen unserer Studierenden sei hier nur exemplarisch auf die zahlrei-
chen Festivalauftritte und Preise im Bereich Film (Prof. Thomas Heise und Prof. Andrei Uji-
ca) verwiesen. Beachtung verdient auch die von DFG-Stipendiatin Dr. Christiane Heibach
organisierte Tagung Atmosphären erleben – Dimensionen eines diffusen Phänomens, bei der
u.a. der 83-jährige Philosoph Hermann Schmitz, der Grandseigneur der deutschen Phäno-
menologie, zu Gast war. Dieser und vergleichbaren Veranstaltungen steht mit der neu ge-
gründeten Reihe HfG Forschung, die im Wilhelm Fink Verlag erscheint, seit 2011 auch ein
geeigneter Publikationsort zur Verfügung.

Als Neuzugang unter den Professoren durften wir im Wintersemester 2010/11 Prof. Chris
Rehberger (Kommunikationsdesign) willkommen heißen. Frau Dr. Kristin Marek kehrte als
Stipendiatin des Margarete von Wrangell-Habilitationsprogramms an die HfG zurück, wo
sie im Fach Kunstwissenschaft bereits promoviert hatte.
The readers of this annual report can see that HfG Karlsruhe in the past academic year
2010/2011 has once again proven its national and international reputation through a series
of initiatives and events. I can only mention a few here.
From 27 to 29 May 2011 we hosted the first 3D festival BEYOND – 3 Days of Dimensions
worldwide at HfG, ZKM [Center for Art and Media] and the film theater SCHAUBURG which
attracted 6,000 visitors. Ludger Pfanz, initiator of the event and director of the Expanded
3Digital Cinema Laboratory was awarded an honorary professorship by Karlshochschule
International University for his part in the research and application of stereoscopic future
technologies, and elected Art and Creative Pilot 2011 by the Federal Ministry of Economics
and Technology. I would like to congratulate him on behalf of all our faculty and staff.
Noticeable in the past year was the tendency to think across the borders of one’s own discipline,
and in doing so, to explore new areas of application. Prof. Florian Pfeffer and his
students, for example, developed the gourmet label The Caterer Who Loved Me – Critical
Cuisine dedicated to the idea of sustainability. With its kiosk Snack Bar for Heroes, it was suc-
cessfully put into practice at Europe’s largest design conference Typo in Berlin in May 2011.
All HfG departments report extensive travelling activities. Prof. Armin Linke (Photography)
and his students travelled to the Mediterranean island Lampedusa to analyze the situation
of the refugees there and its processing by the media on an artistic field trip. Prof. Anna
Jermolaewa (Video) went on an excursion to St. Petersburg, where a group of HfG students
presented their artistic works at the National Center for Contemporary Art (NCCA). Profes-
sor ad interim, Bärbel Küster (Art Research and Media Theory) and her students went to
West-African Mali and Senegal where they documented the photography scene in these
countries through interviews and videos.
Among the many successes of our students, I can only point out the numerous festival presentations
and awards in the area of Film (Prof. Thomas Heise and Prof. Andrei Ujica) as
examples. I may also draw to your attention the conference Experiencing Atmospheres –
Dimensions of a Diffuse Phenomenon organized by Dr. Christiane Heibach, fellow of the
German Research Foundation (DFG). Among the guests was also 83-year old philosopher
Hermann Schmitz, the grand seigneur of German phenomenology. With the newly established
series HfG Research at publishers Wilhelm Fink Verlag, we now also have a suitable place
for publishing about this and similar events.

We would like to welcome Prof. Chris Rehberger (Communication Design) who joined our
faculty in the fall semester 2010/2011. Dr. Kristin Marek returned to HfG, where she had
already obtained her doctoral degree in Art Research and Media Theory, as a fellow of the
Margarete von Wrangell Postdoctoral Program.
