Finalprodukte „Made in Bautzen“ sind weltweitgefragt.

What’s the evidence for this?Michael Böhmer: Bautzen is well positioned economically. The best indicator of the quality of a location is the companiesalready operating there. What you find here is a rangeof market leaders who have quite deliberately identifiedBautzen as an advantageous location. That includes globalplayers such as Bombardier Transportation, Cideon, Develey, edding, Hentschke Bau, itelligence, Leoni, Orgelbau Eule, and Vodafone. Finished products ‘Made in Bautzen’ are indemand all over the world. Bautz’ner mustard has also madepeople from far and wide aware of the town. The town hasalways been placed high up in the various rankings overrecent years. For example, Bautzen was placed first in theranking for towns with more than 20,000 inhabitants, introducedby the Office of the Prime Minister of Saxony. Bautzenwas placed second in a ranking by the Gesellschaft fürMarktanalyse which compares the 15 regional centers ineastern Germany.WJ: Which sectors are the most influential in drivingthe town’s continuing development?Böhmer: Our core capabilities lie in our key sectors suchas general-purpose vehicle manufacturing, the constructionand assembly industry, plastics processing, IT services, plant engineering and toolmaking, engineering, writinginstrument production, foodstuffs and luxury foods, handicrafts, commerce, and so on – a real mix of sectors in fact.WJ: Bautzen has a reputation for being not only amodern, forward-looking location for business andindustry, but also a top provider of employment. That certainly sounds good...Böhmer: ...and it really is good. With 620 jobs subject toWJ: What would you say was the key to the town’seconomic success?Böhmer: The eastward enlargement of the EU in 2004,together with our geographical location close to Polandand the Czech Republic, meant that we progressed frombeing at the periphery to a position right at the center ofcurrent developments in Europe. The commercial and investmentclimate improved markedly because of this. A vastlyimproved infrastructure also played a significant part in theeconomic success of the town. Bautzen has three intersectionsserving the town on the trans-European developmentaxis – the A4 interstate highway; it also has the Bautzen-Litten regional airfield, several local highways leading in alldirections, and good rail connections. These all make forshort travel times and distances.WJ: How important is tourism to the town?Böhmer: Bautzen is fortunate in having a very beautifulold town center which is well worth exploring. Its museumsand other places of interest are a real attraction for visitors. Most people still only take day trips to the town, butthe number of those staying longer is increasing. When thetraditional Sorbian Easter Riding ceremony takes place, forexample, the town is bursting at the seams and all the hotelsare fully booked. And in summer even people from Dresdencome here in large numbers on balmy summer eveningsto enjoy the special Bautzen atmosphere in the manyinns, restaurants and beer gardens.WJ: Bautzen is clearly a good place to work – is italso a good place to live?Böhmer: Most certainly. Everything you need for high qualityday-to-day living is here too. We also score highly interms of the so-called “soft” factors – facilities for children, schools, the many cultural, sports and social facilities – inall these respects we can easily match the big centers ofpopulation in Saxony. We can also offer in great measurethe kinds of things which make life in Bautzen good foryoung people and young families too.Gespräch: Wolfgang BaltzerWIR in SACHSEN 2013 91
