Beharren auf Anregung von Julian Bream,
mit dem Henze während der Komposition
an dem Werk „über mehrere
Phasen zusammenarbeitete, aus denen
er eine vertiefte Kenntnis der klanglichen
und technischen Aura der Gitarre
zurückbringen konnte, [...] denn die Gitarre
[...] verfügt über einen klanglichen
Reichtum, der alles zu umfassen vermag,
was ein modernes Instrumentarium besitzt.Hammerklaviersonate<
für die Gitarre in die Welt zu setzen,
gleichsam ein Kompendium des heutigen
[instrumental-technischen] Standards
[der Gitarre] zu etablieren – das war die
Idee.“ 15
Die Kooperation mit Hans Werner Henze
skizzierte Bream so: „In fact, Hans writes
well for the instrument, at times marvellously
well.[…] It’s when his enormously
imagination comes to the fore, that he sometimes
writes impossibly hard music for
the instrument to play. On the other hand,
I would much rather he did so, because at
the end of the day he’s got such incredible
facility that he can rewrite a passage on
the spot if it doesn’t work. He doesn’t just
tinker with the music and change the odd
note, but he re-writes the whole passage
completely. […] He knows straight away
when he sees what the technical problem
is, and he adjusts the music accordingly.” 16
Die Uraufführung der Sonata I fand 1976
in Berlin statt.
an diesem Stück zeigt (https://www.
youtube.com/watch?v=4G-aWqfQu8Y).
Die zweite Sonate von 1979 (ebenfalls
Bream gewidmet) hat der Gitarrist weder
gespielt noch ediert. Henze entschied
sich daraufhin zur Zusammenarbeit mit
dem Münsteraner Professor Reinbert
Evers. McCallie schrieb hierzu: „Instead
of working with Julian Bream, Henze decided
to employ the talents of the young
guitarist Reinbert Evers during the editing
process. Although a competent guitarist,
Evers’ reticence to challenge Henze on difficult
passages leaves some of the work nearly
unplayable. >The piece is particularly
difficult to play,< Henze said in the preface
to score of the Second Sonata, >and many
a guitar player will approach it with fear
and trembling, just as we ourselves would
not care to cross the path of Lady Macbeth,
above all not now in her present state.
