Textile backing materials for abrasives
make a comeback after 25 years
For flexible abrasives, the textile backing is becoming increasingly
important as a high-tech and innovative product
component – and the market is vast. In Europe alone
some 50 million linear metres of textile abrasives are
needed every year. In its strategic partnership with one
of the world’s three biggest abrasives manufacturers, the
sia Abrasives Industries AG company, AG Cilander has
developed pioneering product solutions through close
cooperation over many years. After a 25 year interruption,
textile abrasive backing materials are to be manufactured
again in Switzerland for the first time. The company has
invested 13 million francs in new buildings and two modern
coating facilities; by doing so, it has built up a production
capacity of five million linear metres per year.

Technical textiles move into
all-new application areas
Functional textiles are finding their way into more and
more new application areas in architecture, industry and
vehicle manufacture. Today even rotor blades for wind
turbines are made of coated and wrapped textiles. They
are far superior to the materials used previously: lighter,
stronger and more favourably priced. The potential uses
of textiles designed for specific functions are almost
unlimited and have enormous future potential. “Can’t
be done – we never say that. We do everything possible
to find customised solutions for our clients even if the
challenge seems tough at first sight …”, CEO and Board

are built on long-standing experience, a wide range
