Zu einem Wechsel an der Spitze des TVS Textilverband
Schweiz kam es Mitte 2011: Max R. Hungerbühler hat
nach sechsjähriger erfolgreicher Amtszeit das Präsidium
an seinen Nachfolger Andreas Sallmann übergeben. Seit
diesem Stabwechsel beherrschen zwei Themen unsere
Agenda: Der überteuerte Schweizer Franken, der das
Leben der exportorientierten Firmen stark erschwert. Und
was mindestens so schlimm ist: Das unaufhaltsame Fortschreiten
A change took place at the head of the Swiss Textile
Federation in mid-2011: after a successful six-year term
of office, Max R. Hungerbühler handed over the chairmanship
to his successor, Andreas Sallmann. Two issues
have topped our agenda since this changeover: the excessively
high exchange rate of the Swiss franc which makes
the life of exporting companies particularly difficult and
another factor that is at least as bad: the ceaseless advance
of de-industrialisation in Switzerland.
The fixing of a minimum exchange rate of CHF 1.20
against the euro by the Swiss National Bank SNB did
bring a slight temporary easing of the situation. Unfortunately,
the SNB was unable to move on to the next step
and lift the exchange rate to at least CHF 1.25 to 1.30.
This would have been necessary to halt the destruction
of jobs or their transfer abroad or at least to slow that
process. Anything else will have negative consequences
in the long run for Switzerland as a manufacturing site
and in particular for our own industry.
The Swiss Textile Federation played an active role: after
a discussion with the SNB leaders a joint round table was
held in autumn 2011 on the topic “Strong Swiss franc:
Where do we go from here?”. At the same time, the Federation
made representations to the government authorities
in Bern and backed its position with a number of
press re leases, radio interviews and some television appearances.
We clearly succeeded in strengthening the
positive perception of the textile and garments industry
among the general public. But our goal has still not been
achieved. The world economic horizon is becoming increasingly
bleak and that is further increasing the pressure
on our strong currency. The Swiss Textile Federation
therefore urgently advocates a minimum euro exchange
rate of CHF 1.35.
We are working hard to achieve that aim!

weltweit. Die US-Konjunktur erholte sich im Berichtsjahr
nur sehr schwach. In China waren inflationäre
Tendenzen zu beobachten. Die Abschwächung der wirtschaftlichen
Dynamik war zudem auch in den Schwellenländern
deutlich sichtbar.
Retrospective
The year 2011 was marked by uncertainty over global
economic and political developments. The US economy
only picked up very weakly in the year under review. Inflationary
trends were observed in China. The flagging
economic momentum was also clearly visible in the
emerging countries. The Swiss economy, and the Swiss
textile and garments industry in particular, was hit hard
by the combination of a weaker global economic situation
and the overvalued Swiss franc. Admittedly the decline
of exports did slacken, but by comparison with the previous
year they still fell 5.2 % to CHF 2.99 billion. Imports
were down by 1.1 % at CHF 7.59 billion. The slower decline
in trade is reflected in the added value of 1.4 %
achieved by the sector against the previous year. In 2011
the figure reached CHF 1.19 billion. The number of employees
in the textile and garments industry also rose by
7.2 % and now stands at around 14,800 persons.*
Outlook
The global economy is set to remain fragile in 2012.
Structural problems and with them the high sovereign
debt levels of the EU and USA will make their mark for
a long time to come. The direction taken by the global
economy will depend in large measure on the financial
markets. If they recover, the eurozone economy is likely
to improve again slowly in 2012. In the USA too the
growth rate picked up slightly towards the end of 2011.
The trend of the Swiss economy is likely to remain weak.
GDP growth (in real terms) is forecast in the 0.2 % to
0.5% range for 2012. This makes the outlook for the
Swiss textile and garments industry even bleaker. Export
business in particular is hit by the continued strength
of the Swiss franc. Moreover for the next half-year we
expect the level of new orders taken to decline and staff
numbers to fall.
* Due to a revision of employment statistics, the compatibility of the 2011
data with previous years is limited.
Export
Exports
By comparison with the previous year, the decline in exports
in the textile and garments industry did slow somewhat,
although it still stood at minus 5.2 %. In the year
under review, exports were still worth CHF 2.99 billion.
While textile exports showed further modest growth in
the first quarter, they fell back by 6.5 % to CHF 1.56
billion in the following three quarters. Garment exports
also recovered somewhat from the steep downward trend
of the previous year. However, a 3.8 % reduction to CHF
1.43 billion was reported.
Exports to almost all of the ten biggest markets declined
in the year under review. Exports of textiles to the
EU and the USA fell by around 9 %. On the other hand
textile exports to the Middle East gained 16.5 %, while
exports to the Asian economic area remained stable.
Unlike textiles, garment exports to the EU rose slightly.
On the other hand, they fell sharply to the USA and Asia.
With a share of around 70 %, the EU remains the most
important export partner of the Swiss textile and garments
industry.
Imports
In the year under review, Switzerland imported textiles
and garments with a value of CHF 7.59 billion, equivalent
to a decline of 1.1 %. Imports of both textiles and garments
fell slightly with figures of - 1.1 % and - 1.2 % respectively.
Textile imports from the EU fell sharply with the biggest
declines reported for the Netherlands and Great
Britain. On the other hand imports of textiles from Asia,
especially from India (13 %), rose. The Asian markets
likewise made strong gains in garment imports. Imports
of garments from Turkey were also around 7 % higher.
Although imports from the EU are falling, the EU member
countries remain the most important source of textiles
and garments with a share of some 76 %.
Employer & Social Policy
This Commission looks after the interests of employers
in the Swiss textile and garments industry. Issues such
as the strength of the Swiss franc, preservation of job
opportunities, short-time working, pay guidelines for 2012,
pension fund shortfalls, dialogue on equality of remuneration,
minimum wage initiative, adoption of a code of conduct
and quotas for women on boards of directors were
the main subjects dealt with at the three meetings.
Pay negotiations with the trade unions ended without
success in the year under review. Companies which were
hit hard by the crisis were unable to meet the demand for
a wage increase across the board. Minimum wages based
on the framework agreement remain unchanged.
Education & Training
Our efforts focused on encouraging young professionals
to join our industry and increasing their numbers. A textile
mailing was sent to some 700 schools calling attention to
career opportunities in our branch. We were also actively
present at educational trade fairs and events. The record
number of 35 apprentices in textile technology is a pointer
to the success of our efforts.
The AUK Training Commission decided to develop a
two-year training course leading up to a vocational certificate.
Against the background of the growing shortage of
specialist personnel and the demographic trend we conducted
a study analyzing the “fitness for the future” of
Communication & Public Relations
On 29 April the Swiss Textile Federation was able to welcome
many journalists to the annual media conference
2010. Apart from facts and figures, attention focused
mainly on the present situation and prospects of the Swiss
textile and garments industry. The presentations by representatives
of our member companies were dedicated
to the theme of “Textile Architecture”.
At the “Social Media” seminar held on 27 October
we welcomed many participants and were gratified by
the strong positive response. The Swiss Textile Federation
was a co-sponsor of the “St. Gall” exhibition in the St.
Gallen Textile Museum.
Active use was made of our legal advisory service, with
the emphasis on issues of labour law: employment contracts,
company regulation, continued payment of wages
and annual holidays. Increasing emphasis was also placed
on trademark and model protection. Our information
meeting in the autumn was well attended.
The Swiss Textile Federation supports the Swissness
proposal and advocates an internationally coordinated
regulation which will enhance the competitiveness of
companies.
Some 110 businesses are affiliated to our EKAS
Branch Solution and a total of 125 internal company
safety officers (SIBE) have been trained.
our member companies. The results are promising in terms
of important skillsets and new models and will continue to
receive our attention.
In May, the 4th International Young Textile Employees’
Congress was held in St. Gallen in cooperation with the
German and Austrian Textile Federations. More than 250
apprentices and professional trainers spent a fascinating
day with highly qualified presentations describing innovations
in our branch. Once again two apprentices who
achieved the best final marks were able to travel to the
USA, while another 20 apprentices spent one week at
the winter camp.
The Freitag Brothers again won Swiss Design Prize 2011
awards. Our Federation’s swiss + cotton and Swiss Organic
Fabrics marks have gained an increasingly wide membership
and were present in 2011 for the first time on a joint
stand at the Munich Fabric Start.
We paid special attention to enhancing the image of
the Swiss textile and garments industry: a contemporary
presentation together with an Internet site were the first
step while the organisation of a competition for an innovation
film prize 2011 / 2012 laid the groundwork for future
film presentations of pioneering achievements in textiles.
aus menschlicher Abwärme», «Ecodesign», «Cradle to
Technology & Research
We attach great importance to the ability of the Swiss
textile and garments industry to innovate. In the year
under review, we therefore focused on the qualification of
SMEs in the area of innovation management. Two seminars
for our member companies were held in cooperation
with the Swiss Textile College.
Another focus of attention was the creation of the textile
Internet search hub “www.texpuls.ch”, which was developed
by the Textile College on our behalf. It is inten ded to
facilitate trend and idea searches for businesses. This hub
was presented at the “Fundamentals of internet searches”
seminar.
Environment & Energy
At three meetings, the Commission specialising in Environment
& Energy UMKO turned its attention primarily to
climate policy after Kyoto, future energy policy, the opening
of the electricity and natural gas market and the law on
chemicals. The Federation stated its position on a number
of issues and voiced its criticisms of the planned eco-tax
reform in a letter to the Federal Council. We delivered our
opinion on the energy strategy 2050, came out in favour
of the continuation of voluntary exemption from the CO2 levy after 2011 and, in the context of the opening of
the natural gas market, supported the development of an
agreement at Federation level between suppliers and
Economy & Statistics
The Economic Affairs Commission was founded during
the year under review. The Commission met three times
with the emphasis on overlapping issues, such as free
trade, rules of origin and exchange rates. From the strategic
perspective, attention focused on lobbying which
was greatly expanded, especially in the context of the
strong franc.
In addition, the economy and statistics department
played an active part in the review of existing and design
of new systems for the rules of origin. In cooperation with
federations in Germany, Austria and other neighbouring
As is the case every year, “Innovation Day” is the highlight
of our activities. On 23 August, the “Swiss Texnet”
(www.swisstexnet.ch) partners had the opportunity to
welcome some 250 participants. The event focused on
the topic of “Textiles in the cleantech context.” The wideranging
presentations were a source of fascinating new
ideas: “Electricity from human waste heat”, “Eco design”,
“Cradle to cradle”, etc. and pointed to opportunities for
sustainable innovation in the textile industry.
industrial consumers. The ERFA meeting on “Environment
& Energy” was held in February 2011 during which information
was provided once again on innovations in the
law, while questions were answered in an exchange of
experience. The event was enriched by presentations on
the issues of “Thermal Energy Coupling”, “Renewable
Energies” and “Waste Water Filtration for the Future”.
The guideline on “Product Safety” was published in
August followed by the “Nano-Textiles” guideline in the
autumn. This was presented to the branch and general
public at the 3rd “Nano Safe Textiles” dialogue.
countries a modern and liberal system of rules of origin
for trade between EFTA, the EU, the Med States and the
West Balkan countries was developed. The department
is working towards the implementation of this system at
both national and international level.
In the year under review, intensive use was made of our
advisory services. Numerous telephone consultations and
some 20 internal company customs workshops showed
that member companies are making increasing use of our
advisory services against the background of the growing
complexity of a number of technical trade issues.
AG Cilander will soon be celebrating its 200th anniversary,
looking back on a tradition which remains an important
source of the enterprise’s ability to innovate until
the present day. What was once a commission finisher
has become a group of companies which are a centre of
expertise for innovative coating and finishing services for
garments and technical textiles. Diversification of the
application areas began ten years ago. The transformation
required intensive use of resources, but was well worth
the effort: sales were stepped up considerably and the
proportion accounted for by the new activity areas extended
to 40 %. Today, the Cilander Group, consisting
of the parent company AG Cilander and its subsidiaries
Geissbühler & Co. AG, Tamando AG with Eugster + Huber
Collection and other prestigious participations whose
manufacturing activities are based exclusively in Switzerland,
has become a strategic partner of world leading
Textile backing materials for abrasives
make a comeback after 25 years
For flexible abrasives, the textile backing is becoming increasingly
important as a high-tech and innovative product
component – and the market is vast. In Europe alone
some 50 million linear metres of textile abrasives are
needed every year. In its strategic partnership with one
of the world’s three biggest abrasives manufacturers, the
sia Abrasives Industries AG company, AG Cilander has
developed pioneering product solutions through close
cooperation over many years. After a 25 year interruption,
textile abrasive backing materials are to be manufactured
again in Switzerland for the first time. The company has
invested 13 million francs in new buildings and two modern
coating facilities; by doing so, it has built up a production
capacity of five million linear metres per year.
Functional textiles are finding their way into more and
“You must constantly get the better
of your materials and machines …”
The market is insatiable. More and more new fabrics, knitwear
and material compositions are expected. At Jakob
Schlaepfer, international Haute Couture is searching for
something really special. The novelties with stitched-on
glitter imparting a very special gloss must be both sophisticated
and luxurious. Matte glitter, bright and loose –
millions of these little round items are made by Jakob
Schlaepfer. The material composition, shapes and special
punching out of the glitter pieces are all a business secret,
as too is the technique for glitter velour production which
brings together three times more glitter pieces on the
fabric than can be achieved by conventional techniques.
Shrinking is the magic word that makes the glitter stand
out from the basic material and imparts a fascinating
three-dimensional quality to the fabric. The famous guipure
embroidery in which the backing material is finally
etched away is also supplied by Jakob Schlaepfer in the
shape of filigree glitter embroidery. Many kinds of backing
materials are used. The dense and heavy glitter webs
are placed on pure wool; for lighter versions, tulle is used
as the basic material and also comes in an expandable
version for high wearer comfort. Always light and airy like
a summer flower.
An exceptional ability to innovate has been the secret
of Jakob Schlaepfer’s success for over 60 years. The
com pany has a big studio and all its creations are developed
in-house. The team around Art Director, Martin
Leuthold, focusses on touch effects and is inspired by
the desire to put as many ideas as possible into practice.
Strenuous work is necessary to master the materials and
machines. You have to get the better of them all the time!
While designers all over the world take their inspiration
from the latest fabric creations, the team at Jakob
Schlaepfer has already been working on the next collection,
or even the next collection but one, for a long time.
They must be able to let go and constantly enjoy new
Freedom begins with the shorts
With Realisation Shorts, freedom can surely be said to
begin with the trousers. The perfect integration of a proven
harness into leisure-styled shorts makes all the difference.
The harness is incorporated into the waist band while
the leg loops are located between the outer fabric and the
inner lining. Technically perfect but camouflaged from
view: “It is great fun to walk directly up to the wall in the
climbing hall, pull the rope through the tie-in loops and
climb the wall, knowing full well that the hall manager will
be taken aback because he is not familiar with the latest
innovation from Mammut …”, Harald Schreiber, PR Manager
of Mammut says with a smile. Like most Mammut
staff he is an enthusiastic mountaineer and one of those
people who prefers to test his employer’s products at close
quarters for himself. That creates a sense of security and
trust and turns the Mammut team into convinced and
committed ambassadors. Realisation Shorts have already
passed the toughest tests: in 2011 Jakob Schubert was
wearing them when he won 7 world cups in a row and
took the overall world cup victory.
On 150 summits round the world
Innovations and surprising highlights have become the
trademark of the mountaineering equipment supplier.
So it is hardly surprising that a success story dating back
for 150 years was celebrated with an event of a very special
kind. On 150 summits worldwide – under this slogan
mountaineering enthusiasts from every continent were
able to make exceptional tours of the mountain peaks.
2,500 suggestions were submitted and 35,000 fans made
a first selection with their votes. By August 2012, 150
teams with experienced mountain guides will be joining
up for a summit experience spanning the globe. Their
As a branch which is heavily dependent on exports, the
Swiss textile and garments industry was again severely
affected by the challenging economic situation in 2011.
After a marked upturn in the early part of 2011, the
strong Swiss franc and cooling world economy placed
companies under severe pressure in the second half of
the year.
Im Frühling 2011 erreichte die Kapazitätsauslastung in
Aufgrund der Währungssituation und der Abkühlung der
Capacity utilisation in the Swiss textile and garments
because of the currency situation and the cooling world
Die Auftragsbestände der Schweizer Textil- und Bekleidungsindustrie
blieben 2011 auf tiefem Niveau stabil.
Insgesamt muss die Auftragssituation aber erneut als
als zu klein.
Order books of the Swiss textile and garments industry
As had already been the case in the previous year, around
2010 betrug der Kapitalbestand der Schweizer Textilund
Bekleidungsindustrie im Ausland CHF 8.9 Mrd. Die
hohen Mittelrückflüsse in die Schweiz 2010 sind wie
2009 hauptsächlich im konzerninternen Kreditverkehr
zustande gekommen.
In 2010, overall capital investment by the Swiss textile
and garments industry in other countries reached CHF
8.9 billion. The high inward flow of resources to Switzerland
in 2010 was again largely attributable to credit
transactions within company groups.
Die Schweizer Textil- und Bekleidungsindustrie beschäftigte
2010 rund 85 000 Mitarbeitende im Ausland. Seit
2007 sind die Personalbestände im Ausland leicht rückläufig.
In 2010, the Swiss textile and garments industry employed
around 85,000 persons abroad. The workforce
employed in other countries has fallen slightly since 2007.

As was already the case in previous years, the trend of
garment exports to the European Union was once again
better than to most other regions of the world in 2011.
68% of all garment exports accordingly went to the EU in
2011. The importance of Asia and the USA diminished
further in both relative and absolute terms.
2011 hat das kumulierte Handelsbilanzdefizit für
Textilien / Bekleidung um 1.8 % gegenüber dem Vorjahr
zugenommen. Aufgrund des Rückgangs bei den Bekleidungsimporten
hat sich das Handelsbilanzdefizit der
Warengruppe Bekleidung 2011 verkleinert, während sich
jenes der Warengruppe Textilien stark ausgeweitet hat.
The cumulative balance of trade deficit for textiles and
garments rose again by 1.8 % in 2011 compared to the
previous year. Because of the decline in garment imports,
the balance of trade deficit for the garments product
group narrowed in 2011, while that of the textiles group
of goods widened sharply.
