Austria’s traditions in the fi elds of agriculture and forestry
are the source of a wide range of know-how and a wealth of
innovative ideas for relevant technology. Such technology
plays a vital role in Austria’s economy as a whole, so that it
shines far beyond the country’s borders.
Innovative technology and information processing have
long been important to this sector. For example, modern
tractors and fertilizing, sowing and harvesting machinery
are already equipped with satellite navigational and mapping
systems (for precision farming) and are highly automated
for the purpose of even distribution. As part of a structural
change, fi elds are increasing in size and the performance
of the machinery in use is rising accordingly, and so the
trend is moving toward more powerful tractors with greater
kilowatt output.
This is the situation faced by Austria’s agricultural and
forestry technology. Furthermore, this sector is positioned
squarely on the cutting edge, making it greatly successful as
an export to the rest of Europe and far beyond, including
China, Japan and the USA. The most important products in
this area are tractors, combine harvesters, “other harvesting
equipment”, “other agricultural equipment”, milking equipment
and spare parts.
One typical characteristic of Austrian manufacturers is
that they possess precise knowledge of the market and sensitivity
when dealing with different mentalities and business
environments. In EU countries such as Slovakia, Slovenia,
the Czech Republic and Hungary, and Russia and
Ukraine as well, agriculture and forestry are economically
vital, and the need to catch up in terms of modern technology
is enormous. Each of these markets require an individual
approach from Austria’s export-oriented manufacturers.
“Small and medium-sized businesses do not exist there
like in Austria”, explained the boss of Reformwerke-Bauer
Clemens Malina-Altzinger. Heinz and Klaus Pöttinger have
also reported that Poland, for example, is virtually divided
into two agricultural regions.
All in all, foreign markets hold constant challenges in
store for Austrian agricultural and forestry equipment, and
the country’s manufacturers always manage to deal with

Aus Österreichs land- und forstwirtschaftlicher Tradition
kommen umfassendes Know-how und eine Unmenge innovativer
Ideen für die aus der Land- und Forstwirtschaft resultierende
Technik. Agrar- und Forsttechnik ist ein unverzichtbarer
Teil der österreichischen Gesamtwirtschaft und
strahlt damit auch weit über die Grenzen hinaus.
Innovative Technik und Informationsverarbeitung haben
längst auch in diesem Bereich Einzug gehalten. So verfügen
moderne Traktoren, Dünge-, Saat- und Erntemaschinen
zum Zwecke der zielgerichteten Ausbringung der Mengen
be reits über satellitengesteuerte Navigations- und Kartierungs
systeme (Precision Farming) und einen hohen Automatisierungsgrad.
Im Zuge des Strukturwandels werden die zu
bewirtschaftenden Flächen pro Betrieb größer und die eingesetzten
Maschinen entsprechend leistungsfähiger, der
Trend geht (analog zum landwirtschaftlichen Strukturwandel)
zu stärkeren Traktoren mit mehr Kilowatt-Leistung.
In diesem Umfeld bewegt sich die österreichische Agrar-
und Forsttechnik. Sie ist dermaßen „state of the art“, dass sie
exporttechnisch weit über Europa hinaus Erfolge ver zeichnet
und selbstverständlich auch schon in China, in Japan
und in den USA bestens reüssiert. Die wichtigsten Produkte
innerhalb der Landtechnik sind Traktor (auch „Schlepper“),
Mähdrescher, „sonstige Erntetechnik“ bzw. „sonstige Geräte
für den Ackerbau“, Melktechnik und Ersatzteile.
Ein Spezifi kum der österreichischen Hersteller sind die
exakten Marktkenntnisse und die Sensibilität im Umgang
mit differenzierten Mentalitäten und Business-Umgebungen.
EU-Länder wie die Slowakei, Slowenien, Tschechien
und Ungarn ebenso wie z. B. Russland oder die Ukraine
zählen zu jenen Staaten, in denen die Land- und Forstwirtschaft
ein wesentlicher Wirtschaftszweig ist und in denen
gleichzeitig enormer Nachholbedarf an moder ner Agrar-
und Forsttechnik besteht. Für Österreichs exportorientierte
Produzenten stellen sich diese Zielmärkte als äußerst heterogene
Gebilde dar. „Einen Mittelstand wie in Österreich
gibt es dort nicht“, erklärt Reformwerke-Bauer-Chef Clemens
Malina-Altzinger. Auch Heinz und Klaus Pöttinger
berichten, dass etwa Polen im Hinblick auf die Landwirtschaft
faktisch zwei geteilt ist.
Alles in allem sind die Auslandsmärkte für Österreichs
Agrar- und Forsttechnik somit immer wieder interessante
Herausforderungen, die regelmäßig „mit Auszeichnung bestanden“
