peace in relation with God. So one believes the reports that on the last day of his
life, when he was about to be murdered on April 9, 1945, shortly before the Allied
troops reached Flossenbürg, he prayed, took off his clothes and went to the
gallows. The doctor present noted: “I have hardly ever seen a man die so entirely
submissive to the will of God.”
As a German who was born 13 years after his death, I am grateful that there were
people like him. With foresight, with courage, with faith. I know that my church
failed in many ways during those days. And I am not sure whether I would have
done any better. But I am convinced that it is our duty to remember the martyrs of
our church. That will give ourselves and our children and grandchildren strength to
resist ideology, the temptation towards violence and seduction by power. It will
give us strength to stand up for fellow human beings, for justice and peace. If we
grow in faith we will grow in courage to resist: that is what Bonhoeffer teaches me
today. That he grew in faith through his experience of martyrdom we can see in the
poem he wrote in prison at Christmas time 1944. We sing it in Germany in our
churches on New Years Eve. And the choir will sing it in a few moments. It shows
that in the end Dietrich Bonhoeffer did cast all his anxiety on God – just as the
watch word for today says. Because he knew God would care for him in this life
and in the life to come.
By gracious powers so wonderfully sheltered,
and confidently waiting come what may,
we know that God is with us night and morning,
and never fails to greet us each new day.
In this we trust as Dietrich Bonhoeffer did. Amen.
