Innovative Seaport Technologies II
Sea harbour terminals combine
tradition and hard physical work. By
introducing the container as a load
carrier in 1956, the use of machines
and other technical equipment increased.
The worldwide availability of products
and services is based on
globalisation and requires efficient
processes in controlling the dynamics
on sea harbour terminals.
Since 2008, the Bremer Institut für
Produktion und Logistik, (BIBA) works
with sea harbour terminal operators
and logistic service providers as part
of the innovative research initiative
seaport technologies - ISETEC II - on
six research projects with different
topics. Two of them are presented in
detail below.
ROBOCON
The research project „Fast deconsolidation
and consolidation of overseas
containers using robotics and
dynamic load planning methods“
(ROBOCON) studies in two sub-projects
the use of automation solutions
in German seaports. The consortium
consists of eight partners. Six of them
are corporate users, one is a technology
developer and the BIBA as
research institution and Thyssen
Krupp Krause as a technology
developer.
The consortium develops a fully
automated robotic system for
unloading packaged goods from
containers in the subproject deconsolidation.
During deconsolidation
and consolidation on the terminal,
the packaged goods are often
dislocated, causing force strengths
that are up to eight times their own
weight. The sub-project explores
the automatic deconsolidation of
containers by using a robotic system
that processes the situation in a
container to unload the container
quickly.
The subproject consolidation is
planning a manufacturing facility
at BLG Automotive GmbH, which follows
the basic understanding of fully
automated material and information
flows in the areas of receiving,
packing and containerization. The
automation of material occurs via
robotic systems, storage systems
and recovery techniques.
ProKon
The research project “Load and
load carrier management in seaports
using innovative information
and communication technologies
(ICT)” (ProKon) deals with the development
of a system for automated
detection of position and status of
load carriers in sea port terminals
through the innovative combination
of information and communication
technologies for identification, communication
and positioning on the
RoRo terminal of the BLG AutoTerminal
GmbH in Bremerhaven.
Even though an increase in cargo
handling on Ro-Ro Terminals
is expected after the economic
crisis, the terminals need new and
effective support by modern technological
processes to strengthen
planning and control methods.
The permanent location of inventory
and documentation of load
carriers is a promising approach
to improve the transparency and
robustness of the load carrier
cycle and thus makes an important
contribution to the requirement that
results from the expected increase
in handling of cargo in the future.
In addition to the projects RO-
BOCON and ProKon, the ISETEC II -
research initiative deals with the projects
LogPRo (Logistic Planning- and
Scheduling Systems in RoRo and
ConRo-Ports) ISUS (Innovative stuffing
and handling technologies for steel
products), Seilbahn (Development
and Realization of a cable-railway
for loaded containers) and Überhöhenrahmen
(Development of new
technologies for detecting locking
states between oversize-frame and
container). Their presentation can
be found in the project overview in
this annual report.
