Award: Land of Ideas
A “Selected Landmark in the Land of Ideas”: the BIBA is awarded and
welcomes logistics researchers from all over the world
The Bremer Institut für Produktion
und Logistik GmbH (BIBA) at the University
of Bremen has been awarded
the “Selected Landmark 2009”
award for its innovative approach of
optimizing production and logistics
processes in the national competition
“365 Landmarks in the Land of
Ideas”. Its interdisciplinary research
at the junction between science and
economy as well as its practice-oriented
realization convinced the jury
and made the institute one of 365
laureates, who represent Germany
in the area of creativity, innovative
ability and future orientation in 2009.
In celebration of this award, BIBA
presented itself to the public with the
event “Intelligent Production and Logistics
Systems – From the Idea to the
Market-Ready Product” on August 17,
2009. Simultaneously, the opening
of the 2nd International Conference
for Dynamics in Logistics – LDIC 2009
was also celebrated at this event.
For Germany as location:
Various ideas and solutions for the
future
BIBA thinks integrated – from logistics
innovation processes via research
and cooperation with industry to
practice-oriented realisation. It works
on technical and organisational
solutions of the future with a lot of
commitment. Out of more than
2.000 submitted applications, BIBA
was selected one of 365 ambassadors
for the Land of Ideas this year.
The Deutsche Bank and the initiative
“Germany – Land of Ideas” conducted
the series of events under the
patronage of German president Horst
Köhler for four years now. It´s a way to
distinguish achievements in the field
of creativity, innovative ability and
future orientation in Germany.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernd Scholz-Reiter,
Executive Director of BIBA and speaker
of LogDynamics, as well as Prof.
Dr.-Ing. Klaus-Dieter Thoben, head
of BIBA’s Department for Application
of Information and Communication
Technologies in Production (IKAP),
accepted the award – also on behalf
of the employees at BIBA.
Panel discussion: Bremen is an
outstanding location for innovative
collaboration
In the following panel discussion
with reputable speakers from industry
and science it became clear, that
the collaboration between research,
economy, administration and politics
in Bremen is working and that several
innovations got into market in consequence.
Demonstrations: From basic research
into practice
Under the motto “Intelligent
production and logistics systems –
from the idea to the market-ready
product”, BIBA presented just a
small extract of the great spectrum
of its work and demonstrated how
it is able to convert fundamental
research into practice. Dynamic
aspects in logistics, which initially
seem theoretical, were presented
with concrete reference to realistic
applications. Just as the daily routine
in handling of logistics processes
could be in the future.
International scientific exchange:
2nd International Conference on
Dynamics in Logistics 2009
The “International Conference on
Dynamics in Logistics” has become
a much-noticed exchange platform
for national and international
researchers. The conference is held
by the „Bremen Research Cluster
for Dynamics in Logistics“ (LogDynamics)
at the University of Bremen
and takes place every two years.
This year, about 120 international
researchers travelled to Bremen to
participate in more than 50 scientific
lectures, to discuss current logistic
questions and to get to know each
other. In her greeting words at the
conference opening, the Senator for
Education and Science of Bremen,
Renate Jürgen-Piepers, underlined
the importance of Bremen as a centre
for technology and reaffirmed
Bremen´s interest in ranking among
the top addresses in this field in Germany.
Bremen is already considered
as one of the best research locations
in logistics, not least in consideration
of BIBA’s achievements. Prof.
Dr. Hans-Jörg Kreowski, professor of
Computer Science from the department
Mathematics/Computer
Science at the University of Bremen,
took a scientific-pragmatic view
on this subject. As chair of the LDIC
organisation committee, he said
there is still a lot to do and several
problems to solve. “We are working
on finding new solutions for transport
problems with ecological and economic
aspects in mind.”
This year, again, the scientific contributions
of the LDIC will be presented
in a book. The series, which is
