Since the end of 2005, the International
Graduate School for
Dynamics in Logistics (IGS) at the
University of Bremen offers excellent
researchers the opportunity to
complete an efficient and structured
graduate program at a logistic
location of long standing tradition.
A total of twenty four Ph.D. students
from twelve countries were initially
in the graduate program – four of
them have already received their
doctorate.
Objectives of the IGS
The growing dynamics of globalization
increase the complexity of
logistic issues. The IGS meets this
challenge by practice oriented
research and by interdisciplinary
and cross-cultural cooperation. The
objective of the IGS is to provide an
optimal research environment and
to foster excellence in education
and research. It aims at improving
the career perspectives of early
stage researchers by offering structured
training in the area of logistics
as well as providing complementary
skills.
Therefore, the IGS is embedded
in the cross-sectional Bremen Research
Cluster for Dynamics in Logistics
(LogDynamics). The research
topics of IGS focus on:
• Holistic interdisciplinary method
workshops for the modeling, analysis
and simulation of logistics
• Synchronisation of material and
information flow
• Adaptive and dynamic controlled
methods for logistics
This concept for higher education
bundles interdisciplinary competences
and supports the interconnection
between research and industry.
Additionally, there are numerous
opportunities for the doctoral students
to participate in international
conferences. One is the involvement
concerning both, content and organization,
in the bi-annual International
Conference on Dynamics in
Logistics (LDIC), a conference set up
by the LogDynamics cluster.
Curriculum of the IGS
The working language is English.
The doctoral students benefit from
disciplinary supervision, scientific
mentoring, organizational and social
support. Aside from the individual
doctorate project, the curriculum
covers collective thematic introductions,
subject specific courses,
interdisciplinary colloquia, dialogue
forums, excursions, as well as individual
coaching regarding soft skills.
Furthermore, the students benefit
from numerous cooperation opportunities
and projects of the research
cluster LogDynamics, particularly
from the close connection to the
Collaborative Research Centre 637
– Autonomous Cooperating Logistic
Processes and the infrastructure of
the LogDynamics Lab.
Application Procedure and Requirements
The IGS addresses young researchers
from all over the world holding
an exceptionally good degree at
German university level (Master/Diploma)
in industrial engineering,
production engineering, mechanical
engineering, electrical engineering,
computer science, mathematics,
physics or economics.
The application must include a
preliminary research proposal with
problem definition, research question,
research methods and literature
references. The application documents
will be evaluated in regard
to the applicant‘s qualification for
doctoral studies at the University of
Bremen and the integration of the
proposed research question into the
research spectrum of LogDynamics.
In some cases grants are available.
The IGS relies on private and public
sponsoring, since these sources
of financing assure the continuity
of its successful operation. For this
reason, candidates are supported
by the IGS in identifying funding opportunities
for doctoral grants.
