GREAT EXPECTATIONS
Beth: Shari, how could you leave me in Toronto all by
m yself next year? Who am I gonna complain to
about the overload of school-work?
Shari: Oh Beth, what are you talking about? I’m gonna
have a heavier workload — don’t forget I’ll have to
master a totally foreign language! I’ve heard that
ulpan is really intense, eh?
REALITY: BY JUNE U.S. “BILINGUAL” STUDENTS
STILL THOUGHT “REGAH” WAS THE NAME OF
THE BUS DRIVER. “I THOUGHT ‘CHIC CHAC’
WAS THE ISRAELI FORM OF CHICLETS”.
Beth: But think of how amazing your social life is gonna
be. Y ou’re going to meet a whole bunch o f Israelis,
Europeans, South Africans, South Americans. Who
knows, you may even becom e friends with some
Ethiopians.
Shari: Yeah, next year I’ll probably be able to visit
almost any country in the world and have a free
place to crash.
REALITY: “IF I SEE ONE MORE ARROGANT AMERI-
CAN I’M GOING TO PROJECT MY VOMIT IN
THAT DIRECTION.”
“WHO WOULD EVER WANT TO VISIT
GLOVERSVILLE?”
“I EXPECTED TO MEET PEOPLE FROM HAR-
VARD, YALE, PRINCETON, UNIVERSITY OF
TORONTO... YET ALL WE ENCOUNTER ARE
THESE HICKS FROM SOMEPLACE LIKE HAMIL-
TON COLLEGE. CAN YOU IMAGINE?”
Beth: And just think how great it’s going to be being
independent. It’ll be just like having your own
apartment. .
Shari: Yeah, partying all night long, doing my own
cooking, no responsibilities; what more could I ask
for?
REALITY: “UH-OH, I MADE ANOTHER ENEMY ON
THE FLOOR... BUT IF I LOWER THE MUSIC
ONE MORE DECIBEL THE 350 PEOPLE IN MY
ROOM WON’T BE ABLE TO HEAR IT.”
“BURNT THE SPAGHETTI... LOOKS LIKE WE’RE
DINING ON CHEESE TOAST AGAIN.”
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN WE ONLY HAVE TWO
WEEKS TO PUT TOGETHER A 100-PAGE
YEARBOOK?”
Beth: And just look at the pictures in the pamphlets of
the dorms, they look gorgeous.
Shari: And m y mother is always ranting and raving of the
fun she and her roommate used to have.
REALITY: “I FEEL AS THOUGH I’M LIVING IN A
SHOEBOX THAT LOOKS LIKE HELL TURNED
OVER AND SMELLS LIKE STALE SHILSHUL.”
Beth: Well, I guess this is goodbye. I’m really gonna miss
you but I know this will be an amazing experience
for you. Who knows? It may even be the best year
of your life.
REALITY: WITHOUT A DOUBT, IT WAS.
The year may not have lasted, but the memories always
will.
“Memories, pressed between the pages of my mind.”
We’ll miss you Hebrew U.
Twilight Zone
We must be careful when we return
It will be easy to forget all that was learned
We may again get caught up in the materialistic scene
Where life is easy and the toilets are clean
But remember the times when you were using your mind
Confronted by issues and problems only Israel could find
It is a precious place, that fact cannot be denied
The land, the people, everything so diversified
Thus as we move, forward, attaining the goals towards
which we strive
Let us not forget the importance of this year’s affect on our
lives
