6.2: <strong>Pipe</strong> zone backfilling<br />

The selected backfill material should be placed evenly on both sides of the pipes and compacted as per the requirements of<br />

section 4.1, depending on the backfill material. Appropriate hand or mechanical tamping shall be carried out by the<br />

Contractor to achieve the specified degree of compaction required by the selected installation type. During the first one or<br />

two lifts, special care should be taken to place and to compact the backfill material under the pipe haunches. The best way<br />

to achieve this compaction is to do it manually with the mean of a wooden board. This is one of the most important<br />

installation steps and should be executed diligently. Failure to place and to compact the backfill material<br />

under the pipe haunches may cause ovalization, localized loads and over deflection of the pipes.<br />
