Bartele Gallery is the only
dedicated shop in Indonesia
where you can buy original
antique maps, prints and
photographs, some up to 500 years
old. Their first gallery was in Mega
Kuningan, and they will be opening
a new antiques gallery in Kemang
very soon. This new gallery will be
located at Jl. Kemang Raya No. 29A
and promises to boast an extensive
collection of antique maps and
prints, along with genuine European
antiques, including some very rare
French art deco collectibles.
If you are a photography lover and take
an interest in the history of Indonesia,
you can’t miss an interesting exhibition
titled “A Glimpse into the Past” by
Bartele Gallery held at Eastern Promise
in Kemang. The exhibition was opened
on the evening of the 28th of April to
display original early 20th century black
and white photographs published by
Kleynenberg & Co. of Haarlem, The
Netherlands, which were printed between
1911 and 1914. These photographs were
taken for the educational print series
Platen van Nederlandsch Oost-Indie which
consists of 171 pictures, 150 of which are
of the East Indies, with the remaining 21
being from the West Indies and Suriname,
covering landscapes, culture, industries,
people, and many more.
The photographer, Jean Demmeni,
was born at Padang-Panjang in West
Sumatra in 1866, son of a French father
and Indonesian mother. He entered the
army in the East Indies and was assigned
to the Topographic Service in Bandung
in the early years of the 20th century
where he perfected his skills as a surveyor
and photographer. Between 1911 and
1940, tens of thousands of pupils in
Dutch secondary schools were made
familiar with the customs, cultures and
landscapes of the far away Indonesian
archipelago through these attractive largescale
photographs which hung in their
classrooms.
One hundred years later, the subjects
and compositions of these photographs
give present-day digital photographers a
run for their money. It is easy to get lost in
the feeling of nostalgia when marvelling
at their beauty.
At this showcase, guests will be able
to purchase these original photographs
which are individually framed and
measure roughly 90cm by 80cm in the
frames. Members of the public will also
have the rare opportunity to bid for one
complete set of the 150 photographs
which focus on the East Indies from
Platen van Nederlandsch Oost-Indie, along
with the chance to bid for a smaller set
which includes the first 50 photographs
from this series.

One of the oldest taverns in
Jakarta and certainly the
oldest in Kemang, Eastern
Promise is a British Indianthemed
restaurant and pub that has
enjoyed an established reputation as
a prime dining / drinking destination
for the past 21 years. Offering flavorful
dishes, interesting regular events,
and a laid back yet respectful setting,
Eastern Promise has maintained
a strong base of loyal patrons for
the past 21 years. Containing four
distinct areas – Restaurant, Front Bar,
Sports & Function Room, and Music
Garden, Eastern Promise is a versatile
venue that caters a variety of purposes
and events.
The Front Bar is popular for its Pressure
Hour – a free flow of draught beer until
someone leaves the room or visits the
toilet, held every Friday from 5 to 6 pm.
The beverage selections include tasteful
signature drinks, Strawberry Margarita
and Lagarita – a mix of lager and
margarita. The Sports & Function Room
accommodates private parties and viewing
of televised sporting events on satellite
dishes and Internet live streaming. The
Music Garden is an alfresco drinking area
with a retractable roof, hosting live music
on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Meanwhile, The Restaurant primarily
serves a rich blend of Western and Indian
dishes. It is known for its top-sellers,
such as Chicken Tikka Masala and Balti
curries. However, since its takeover by
a Dutch management – keyed up by
Bartele Santema, Lens ter Wee and Jasper
Bouman – a tinge of Dutch flavors has
also been introduced to the restaurant’s
culinary repertoire.
Popular Dutch meals and snacks, such
as Frikandel Speciaal, Broodje van Dobben
Kroket, Hutspot, and Dutch Erwten
(Pea) Soup are among the favorites. The
Frikandel is a Dutch pork sausage served
with Dutch curry sauce and mayonnaise.
Bitter ballen are savoury Dutch meat
snacks made from minced beef, beef broth,
and parsley. A Broodje kroket is a bigger
version of the bitterbal served on a bun
with mustard, while Hutspot is a Dutch
version of bangers and mash, either served
with a Unox rookworst (imported Dutch
pork sausage) or a 200gr beef and pork
meatball.
The Dutch influence also manifests in
the restaurant’s partnerships with a number
of Dutch organizations. This includes
a discount program for the members
of De Nederlandse Club (The Dutch
Club) and providing catering services for
events like hockey tournament Zuid Oost
Asie Toernooi, the Oranje Golf Days,
and smaller parties at the Nederlandse
Internationale School. Additionally, Eastern
Promise regularly hosts Dutch traditional
events, such as de Batavia Borrel.
Eastern Promise offers a unique
dining experience by offering bold and
distinctive tastes and putting them in a
