Sport Injuries:
Prevention & Treatment
When we exercise, we expect certain results. Some of us want to keep our body fit and healthy,
while many others want to stay slim. Those who are overweight exercise rigorously to be
slim, while others exercise to build particular parts of the body. Now what if the heavy
exercise is not giving you what you wish for but, instead, it gets you injured?
Mistakes that Lead to
Sport Injuries
Sport and exercise don’t always
lead to good health. if not done
properly, both can lead to fatal
injuries that can change the live
of the sufferer. The first mistake
that frequently leads to sport
injury is a wrong choice of sport
or exercise.
One can’t just decide which
sport or exercise regime is best
for them. Not only do you need
to know and have the right
equipment – ergonomicallydesigned
bycicle, running
shoes slightly larger than the
size of your foot, or sweatabsorbent
sport shirt- but you
must also find out whether or
not you have the proper health
condition to do your chosen
type of exercise. For example,
the choices of sport for the
elderly will be different than
those for younger people. even
two people of the same age
may have different options of
the types of sport that best suit
them. The one with a weaker
heart certainly should not
choose running, unlike one who
suffers from diabetes.
The second mistake is
the lack of knowledge to do
sport or exercise properly. For
example, let’s say one decides
to cycle from home to the office
in order to reduce body weight.
When cycling on the highway,
the person experiences pain
after drinking cold water – so
excrutiating as if there’s a
splinter in the heart. Or a worse
scenario would be if the person
fainted, since he or she is not
accustomed to long-distance
bike ride under the unfriendly
heat of the sun. The bottom line
is sport can be dangerous if you
do not know what you’re doing.
For most athletes, the
common mistake which could
lead to injury is excessive
training. it’s the most common
cause of fatigue or overuse
syndrome, which happens
when certain body part is
injured because of over training.
For example, a runner who
suffers pain in the knees and
soles of the feet due to too
frequent practice.
in addition to all the above
mistakes, there is also another
cause of injury of which the
preventive measure is beyond
our humanly power. Some
people call it bad luck. in highrisk
competitive sports such
as martial arts and boxing, or
sports that require agility such
as football and rugby, injuries
are often difficult to avoid.
Sport Injury
Prevention
To prevent injuries, it’s important
to always start with a warm-up
exercise before participating in
technical sport, and perform a
cooling-down exercise after. The
use of proper sport equipments
also helps, as well as knowing
which type of sport or exercise
suits our needs. For the latter,
not all people know how. Not
everybody knows where to get
good advice from the experts
about the right type of sport or
exercise for us either.
rS Premier Bintaro hospital,
a member of ramsay Health
care hospital group, establishes
a Sport clinic which provides an
integrated and comprehensive
service for handling problems
related to sport activities. The
service includes consultation,
examination and supervision
on sport activities, in which
guidance for the patient to do
appropriate training is given in
accordance with the patient’s
physical condition - so that the
risk of injury can be minimized.
Sport clinic was supported
by dr. Hario Tilarso, Sp.KO,
FacSM, a sports physician
and dr. Sapto adji H, Sp.OT,
orthopedic sport medicine
consultant. in an interview
with Now Jakarta at the rS
Premier Bintaro, dr. Sapto adji
shared that the main purpose
of the Sport clinic was
education.
“Sport and exercise have
become a necessity”, he said,
“But not every type of sport
or exercise is right just for
anyone. Sport clinic provides
sessions for consultation with
the doctors, so that the elders,
as well as people with heart
disease, lung or diabetes -
just to name a few, can keep
exercising in accordance with
their health condition. We also
give guidance on how to do
sport properly and correctly to
minimise the risk for injury”.
Preliminary examination
for athletes before they
compete, or is more commonly
known as pre-participation
examination, is also performed
at the Sport clinic. The health
checks include x-rays, radiology,
electrocardiography (ecG),
blood chemistry tests, as well
as physical fitness tests to
determine whether or not the
athlete is strong enough to
compete. Through a series of
tests, data on the atlethe’s grip
strength, back strength, leg
strength as well as flexibility
and speed, among others, can
be obtained. Based on the tests
results, a solid conclusion can
be made about what kind of
training is still needed so that
the athlete can achieve the
maximum performance at the
competition. This of course, is
also to minimise the risks of
injury.
Treatments for Sport
Injuries
Before one goes to see a
doctor to be treated further
from any sport injury, dr. Sapto
adji suggests that it’s helpful
to know how to do the initial
treatment first. an appropriate
initial treatment prevents the
injury from becoming more
severe. “We observe that initial
treatment for sport injury is
still incorrectly performed. a
traditional massage followed
with a warm compress on the
injured area is still commonly
perceived as the right initial
treatment. That’s wrong”, dr.
adji explained.
rS Premier Bintaro’s Sport
clinic is consistently educating
the public on the correct initial
treatment for sport injury,
namely the rice method (rest,
ice, compression, elevation).
For example for a knee injury,
the first step of treatment is
the rest, where the injured
knee is rested and not used
for walking before the swelling
goes down. Second is the
ice, where the injured area
is compressed with ice or
cold water to reduce pain as
well as the swelling. Next is
the compression, where the
injured area is wrapped with
a compression bandage to
reduce swelling. Last is the
elevation, where the injured
person lies with the leg
elevated to reduce swelling.
after the initial treatment,
doctors will analyse further
before they perform any
advanced treatment, only if
necessary. For a difficult case,
the patient’s situation will be
studied at once by dr. Hario,
and dr adji who all have
different specialties.
Hence, the conclusion on
the situation as well as the
solution can be obtained
more quickly, and more
effective treatment can be
performed. “Muscle strain
can be restored with drugs
or physiotherapy. But if
it’s ripped, the type of
treatment will depend on
the situation, whether or not it
can be sewn back, or whether
it needs to be replaced, which
can only
be done through surgery,” said
dr. adji.
if surgery is required,
such as for muscle injury,
Sport clinic can perform the
most sophisticated surgery
procedure today called
‘arthroscopy’, a minimally
invasive surgical procedure
in which an examination
and sometimes treatment
of damage of the interior of
a joint is performed using
an arthroscope, a type of
endoscope that is inserted
into the joint through a small
incision. This reduces recovery
time and may increase the
rate of surgical success due to
less trauma to the connective
tissue.
Sport clinic rS Premier
Bintaro is also supported with
state of the art rehabilitation
facilities, including the DBc
(Documentation Based care).
“it’s a physiotherapy system,
where patients are given
an exercise therapy using
sophisticated equipments,
with their progress monitored
seamlessly”, dr. Hario
explained. rehabilition plays a
crucial role in the process of
healing and recovering from
injury where stretching and
strengthening activities are
only a few types of physical
therapy exercises. Balance,
joint control, and muscle retraining
are other types of
important physical therapy
exercises. a success in surgery
does not guarantee the patient
will fully recover if not followed
by appropriate rehabilition
programme.
With an integrated injury
treatment at the Sport
clinic, from the moment
that the injury occurs until
full recovery, a patient goes
through appropriate and save
procedures which lead to a
more satisfactory outcome.
