JALAN SESAMA is an
Indonesian adaptation of
the US children’s TV series,
Sesame Street, targeting
3-6 year old audiences. The
educational show teaches children
positive morals with the aim of
helping them learn basic cognitive
and life skills. The show addresses
issues specific to the region and
encourages young children to
protect the environment and
appreciate the indigenous cultural
and biological diversity.
JALAN SESAMA has aired three production
seasons, each consisting of 52 episodes.
Having premiered on February 18, 2008,
JALAN SESAMA hopes to continue
educating and entertaining children around
Indonesia – and help them to reach their
highest potential. The show is co-produced
by Creative Indigo Productions Indonesia
and Sesame Street.
THE ELEMENTS
Educational Objectives
Each of the various segments within the
half hour episodes is designed to present
a single educational objective derived from
the Statement of Educational Objectives
(more commonly referred to as the
“Curriculum”) – which is the educational
framework for the project. The curriculum
was developed by Indonesian educators
and child development experts and
addresses the universal educational needs
of children as well as reflecting local values
and educational priorities. The curriculum
covers six broad developmental areas:
1) Physical, 2) Cognitive, 3) Emotional, 4)
Social, 5) Aesthetic, and 6) Moral.
These six educational aspects
are introduced in conjunction
with a central theme. The central
theme is decided upon at a
curriculum workshop that is held
prior to the production stage.
Previous central themes
have included: Literacy,
Character Building,
Environmental Awareness, and Diversity
– all of which are closely correlated
with local issues affecting children in
Indonesia.
Show Format
The JALAN SESAMA program features
stories and songs that are all presented in
Bahasa Indonesia. Each episode consists
of studio segments which are locally or
internationally produced and feature the
JALAN SESAMA muppets and the Sesame
Street characters; the Live Action Film
segment (a short film on culture and
the lives of Indonesian children) and an
animation segment.
Each episode of JALAN SESAMA is
broken down into independent segments,
and each segment teaches one
educational objective. This way, children can
enjoy and benefit from the segments even if
they only watch parts of the episode.
Characters
The studio segment of JALAN SESAMA is
the program’s main feature. The segment
tells the story of four muppet characters
that live on JALAN SESAMA: Tantan,
Jabrik, Momon and Putri, each with a
distinct personality and talents. Peripheral
characters include Secret Agent 123, who
helps children learn basic arithmetic using
his “secret recorder”; Gatot Kata, who
introduces the ‘letter of the day’; and the
universally-adored Elmo, who poses as a
hapless newcomer eager to learn about the
customs and people of Indonesia.
