Kids - No Longer Seen
But Not Heard!
This issue has some interesting themes: Kids,
Surabaya and Holland. All are important but
to those of us who are parents there is nothing
more important than our children.
But you can’t separate education from children
or children from education and that’s why we
have included education as part of this special
section. And we are lucky here in Jakarta,
certainly for the international community and
increasingly for those able to afford private
education we have a very good choice of schools,
some of which are featured in this issue.
The problem for kids in Jakarta is not school but
what to do after school and at the weekends.
That’s why we have put together a whole article
about pastimes, sports, games, holidays and amusements that don’t revolve around
computer games and TV! Yes we know that today’s kids will dive on their computer or
DS the minute we turn our backs. So we need to take great care.
Kids need to be inspired, stimulated and challenged and we must not leave that to
the schools alone. So to all parents out there – visitors to Jakarta and residents alike
– think hard on what it is your children need – not what they want – and see if you
can deliver it consistently. I’m still trying.
One outstanding example of success in kid’s sport is the Jakarta Schools Football
Association which organise the CocaCola League and the Greenfields Cup. From
nothing just five years ago to an astonishing 2000 kids from 60 schools playing a
three month season is just amazing. Our congratulations go to Brian Dallamore and
Marc Sprakel and their team. Well done! (See page 96)

power, and latterly as a major partner,
donor, mentor and benefactor. Some of
the multitude of projects undertaken
by the Dutch here are featured in this
section together with a frank interview
with the charming Ambassador.
We are delighted that the present
relationship is so positive.
We also take you to the industrial city
of Surabaya where some of Indonesia’s
biggest industries are located, and which
is home to some great hotels. We also
visit the fascinating House of Sampoerna
museum. It’s well worth the trip.
