Appendix E: Cleaning of a tubular heat exchanger in an ultrasonic bath using<br />

an aqueous cleaning agent<br />

1 Material / Size<br />

Approx. 900 x 4300 mm<br />

Copper/nickel alloy<br />

The outer surface of the pipes and the jacket which are in contact with oxygen have to be cleaned.<br />

2 Cleaning Method<br />

Immersion in ultrasonic bath.<br />

Cleaning agent : 1 % aqueous solution - pH neutral<br />

US-bath: 10 m x 2 m x 1.5 m. 8 oscillators, stainless steel<br />

Duration: 4 - 5 h; during this time period, the exchanger should be. moved/turned several times<br />

with a crane.<br />

Temperature: 50 - 60°C<br />

3 Rinsing<br />

Immersion in a second stainless steel bath with deionised water, 1.5 h at 40 - 50°C. Exchanger<br />

moved/turned 2 times.<br />

4 Drying<br />

In a tent with clean air 4 - 5 h at 30 - 40°C<br />

5 Inspection Method<br />

Wipe test and visual inspection with UV light.<br />

6 Conservation of Cleanliness<br />

Packed in a clean polyethylene bag (thickness > 0.15 mm) and sealed<br />

7 Labelling<br />

The bag is provided in and outside with a label. "Cleaned for oxygen service. Keep free from oil and<br />

grease. Inspection date/stamp".
