much coal historically has been used for the boilers. The historical coal use is a function of the relative amount of
citrus concentrate and single strength fruit juice made in a year and a calculation is made to determine the relative
energy needs of the two types of output and to calculate an emissions factor for each.
Calculation of peel drier emissions factor
Coal requirement = Amount of water that needs to be evaporated to achieve 1 ton of dried peels * gross
heat requirement to evaporate 1 ton of water considering all losses / CV of Coal
= 3.444 tonne * 4.722245 GJ/tonne/27
= 0.602349 tonne of coal/tonne of peels dried
CO2e emissions factor = coal requirement * atomic weight of CO2/atomic weight of carbon * carbon content of
the coal
= 0.602349 * 44.01 / 12.01 * 0.6
= 1.324364 tonnes CO2e per tonne of peels dried
Establishing how much coal historically has been used by the peel drier and boilers respectively
The coal requirement in the peel drier is 0.602 tonnes per tonne of dried peels produced. When using the 0.602 and
multiplying it by the average peel produced in the last five years, the following average coal use attributable to the
peel drier and boilers respectively is found:
