30. For comparative purposes the only reasonably reliable
figures of Chinese population are those of the censuses of 1911 and
1921. As regards the 1921 figures we would, however, observe that
the census was taken in the month of April, and that in those territories
in which the slump, which was then at its worst, was most
felt it is probable that the Chinese population enumerated at the 1921
census was above the mean population of the year.
31. Trade conditions improved slightly in British Malaya in
1922 as compared with 1921, and this improvement probably reo
acted favourably on Chinese immigration, while in 1923 a considerable
improvement in trade conditions was noticed. We must
oonfess, however, that, having regard to all the circumstances, we
are unwilling to attempt an estimate of the adult Chinese male
population in 1922 and 1923.
