In a <strong>conservation</strong> context, the effects <strong>of</strong> <strong>fire</strong>s on <strong>in</strong>digenous and exotic organisms is <strong>of</strong> major <strong>in</strong>terest;<br />

persistence <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>digenous species and ext<strong>in</strong>ction <strong>of</strong> the exotics may be desired. The <strong>fire</strong>s occurr<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> a reserve, whether they have been ignited by people or natural means, have effects that are<br />

determ<strong>in</strong>ed by the <strong>fire</strong> regime – type, <strong>in</strong>terval, <strong>in</strong>tensity and season – and the ecosystem context.<br />

Fire regimes may change as a result <strong>of</strong> prescribed burn<strong>in</strong>g, efficient suppression operations, reserve<br />

isolation or chang<strong>in</strong>g climates.<br />

There literature on the effects <strong>of</strong> <strong>fire</strong> regimes is vast, but this does not necessarily answer local<br />

managers’ needs <strong>for</strong> specific <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation. In<strong>for</strong>mation is accumulat<strong>in</strong>g rapidly and managers can act<br />

<strong>in</strong> ways that enhance local knowledge.<br />
