defcent, as was well known to the governor himfelf: that he was<br />

willing to confider himfelf as the vaffal of the king of Portugal, and to<br />

grant every advantage in point of trade, that they could expeö: from the<br />

adminiftration of his rival: that fince his obtaining the crown he had<br />

manifefted the utmoft friendfhip to the Portuguefe, for which he appealed<br />

to the treaty formed with him by the government of Malacca, and<br />

•which was not difturbed by any fault that could in juftice be imputed to<br />

him. Thefe arguments, like all others that pafs between (tares which<br />

harbour inimical defigns, had no effect upon Alboquerque, who after<br />

reconnoitring the ground, gave orders for the attack. Geinal was now<br />

fenfible that there was nothing left for him but to conquer or die, and<br />

refolved to defend himfelf to extremity, in an intrenchment he had formed<br />

at fome diflance from the town of Pafay, where he had never yet ventured<br />

to refide, as the people were in general incenfed againft him on account<br />

of the deftruclion of the late king of their choice. For though they were<br />

ever ready to demolifh thofe whom they difliked, yet were they equally<br />

zealous to facrifice their own lives, in the caufe of thofe whom they<br />

were attached to. The Portuguefe force confifte'd but of three hundred<br />

men, yet fuch was the fuperiority they pofieffed in war over the<br />

inhabitants of thefe countries, that they entirely routed Geinal's army<br />

which amounted to three thoufand, with many elephants, although they<br />

fought bravely. When he fell, they became difpirited, and the people of<br />

Aru joining on the purfuit, a dreadful flaughter fucceeded, and upwards<br />

of two thoufand Sumatrans lay dead, with the lofs of only five or fix<br />

Europeans; but feveral were wounded, among whom was Alboquerque<br />

himfelf.<br />

The next meafure was to place the young prince upon the throne,<br />

which was performed with much ceremony. Moulana the prieft was<br />

appointed his governor, and Nina Cunapam, who in feveral inftances<br />

had ihewn a friendfhip for the Portuguefe, was continued in the office<br />

of Shabandar. It was flipulated that the prince fhould do homage to<br />

the crown of Portugal; give a grant of the whole produce of pepper<br />
