at a glance MAY PayPal’s 15 million UK customers can now use their smartphones to pay at stores owned by Aurora Fashions group – Coast, Oasis and Warehouse – and Karen Millen. The service was launched nationally in May and is now available in 230 stores. The PayPal in-store app, available for Android and Apple iOS (iPhone and iPad) devices, brings the flexibility of online shopping to the High Street. The app provides the customer with a unique barcode and transaction number, which the shop cashier scans to take payment from the customer’s PayPal account. Rakuten Inc., one of the world’s largest online marketplaces, announced that it is leading a $100 million investment in Pinterest. Existing investors Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, and FirstMark Capital, as well as a number of angel investors will participate. Karma, the mobile gift-giving app, was acquired by Facebook. The announcement came shortly after the markets closed on Facebook’s first day as a publicly traded company on May 18. Since then the share price has fallen and investors have treated the offering with trepidation. In the wake of concerns about a lack of disclosure in Facebook’s controversial IPO, regulatory observers have asked politicians to investigate ways to improve the IPO process. HSBC Merchant Services LLP, a whollyowned subsidiary of Global Payments, is set to deploy contactless payment solutions to all Post Office branches in the UK. All 11,000 Post Office branches in the UK will be provided with contactless terminals to allow customers with Master- Card Paypass and Visa PayWave cards to make payments under £20. Customers will also be able to pay using NFC equipped mobile phones. The latest figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index revealed that British shoppers spent an estimated £6 billion online in May, equating to a 13 per cent growth on the same time last year, and five per cent on April. This marks a return to growth in line with the last 12 months and matches the 13 per cent growth estimate for the full year. JUNE Marks & Spencer is using the Demandware Commerce platform to power its new international websites, including its recently launched Ireland website, www. marksandspencer.ie. This follows Marks & Spencer’s first international website, www.marksandspencer.fr, serving customers across France since October 2011. Manchester City Football Club has installed address auto-fill technology from Postcode Anywhere on its office administration software. The address validation service increases the speed of contact data entry and ensures the accuracy of any details entered, preventing tickets and other orders from being dispatched to the wrong address. eCommera launched a mobile app service, designed to provide brands and retailers a quick route to market to sell via mobile devices and deepen customer engagement. The mobile app service is a configurable out-of-the-box solution that works across multiple mobile devices and operating systems. Underbelly, the live entertainment company, revealed it had become the first in the UK to integrate new payments security from Phoenix Managed Networks.
