2b. GENERAL ZOOLOGY. First term; three hours; four<br />
laboratory hours; five credits.<br />
An examination <strong>of</strong> the great principles <strong>of</strong> Zoology, together<br />
with a study <strong>of</strong> the structure, activities and relationships <strong>of</strong> repre-<br />
sentatives <strong>of</strong> the different groups <strong>of</strong> animals.<br />
2d. TAXONOMY OF THE HIGHER PLANTS. Prerequi-<br />
site, General Botany or its equivalent. Second term; one hour<br />
lecture; laboratory or field work, four or eight hours; three or<br />
five credits.<br />
A study <strong>of</strong> the kinds <strong>of</strong> ferns and seed plants and field work<br />
on the flora about Williamsburg. Emphasis is placed on wild plants,<br />
but the common cultivated plants receive some attention. <strong>The</strong><br />
course should be useful both in preparation for special work and<br />
as an aid ir^ teaching. Each student prepares an herbarium.<br />
2e. SOILS. Prerequisite, Elementary Chemistry. First term;<br />
two hour lectures; laboratory and field zvork, two hours; three<br />
credits.<br />
Origin and formation <strong>of</strong> soil material; classification <strong>of</strong> soils;<br />
physical properties, fertility, manures and fertilizers ; activities <strong>of</strong><br />
soil micro-organisms ; work <strong>of</strong> experiment stations.<br />
3d. GENETICS. Prerequisite, ten credits in the department.<br />
Second term; three hours; three credits.<br />
<strong>The</strong> principles <strong>of</strong> variation and heredity in plants and animals,<br />
including man ; and the practical application <strong>of</strong> these principles.<br />
3e. VERTEBRATE ANATOMY. Prerequisite, ten credits in<br />
the department; five <strong>of</strong> these credits should be for General Zoology.<br />
First term; two hour lectures; six laboratory hours ; five credits.<br />
This course takes up in a comparative way the structure <strong>of</strong><br />
vertebrate animals.<br />
3f. PLANT PHYSIOLOGY. Prerequisites, General Botany<br />
and ten credits in Chemistry. First term; two hours lectures; six<br />
laboratory hours; five credits.<br />
