3b. HISTORY OF EUROPE SINCE 1914. Slecond term;<br />
three hours; three credits.<br />
A continuation <strong>of</strong> History 3a. This course will treat <strong>of</strong> the<br />
immediate origin <strong>of</strong> the World War, the campaigns <strong>of</strong> that war,<br />
the Peace Conference and later developments in the history <strong>of</strong><br />
Europe. <strong>The</strong>re will be required readings and problems.<br />
4a and 4b. HISTORY OF VIRGINIA, 1763-1830. First and<br />
second terms; two hours; two credits each term.<br />
In this course there is a study <strong>of</strong> the preliminaries <strong>of</strong> the<br />
revolution in Virginia, beginning with the Parsons Cause, followed<br />
by a detailed examination <strong>of</strong> the progress <strong>of</strong> the revolution, with<br />
special emphasis on the social rather than military conditions. Much<br />
attention is paid to the influence <strong>of</strong> Henry and Jefiferson and to the<br />
origin and progress <strong>of</strong> the democratic movement. Much illustrative<br />
material, such as manuscripts, newspapers and maps, is brought to<br />
the attention <strong>of</strong> the class.<br />
4c. HISTORY OF ENGLAND. First term; three hours;<br />
three credits.<br />
A general survey <strong>of</strong> English history with special emphasis on<br />
the period since 1485. Lectures, text-books, special topics and<br />
additional readings.<br />
4d. ECONOMIC HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES.<br />
Second term; three hours; three credits.<br />
A study <strong>of</strong> the economic development <strong>of</strong> the United States. A<br />
knowledge <strong>of</strong> the political and social background for study <strong>of</strong> this<br />
subject is reqiiired. Students will be expected to do considerable<br />
reading and to prepare a paper.<br />
4e. HISORY OF THE RENAISSANCE. First term; three<br />
hours; three credits.<br />
A study <strong>of</strong> the period <strong>of</strong> transition from mediaeval to modern<br />
times. <strong>The</strong> history <strong>of</strong> Italy during this period, the revival <strong>of</strong> learn-<br />
ing and the organization <strong>of</strong> national states. <strong>The</strong>re will be discussions<br />
upon assigned topics.
