1990<br />
President Cory Aquino inaugurates the<br />
Paskuhan Village, the first Christmas village<br />
in Asia and the third of its kind in the world.<br />
1991<br />
On June 15, San Fernando, like most towns<br />
in the Kapampangan Region, is covered<br />
with a thick layer of ash, pumice and sand<br />
from the erupting Mount Pinatubo. But<br />
the worst is yet to come.<br />
1995<br />
Shortly after midnight on October 2, heavy<br />
rains caused by Typhoon Mameng mobilize<br />
pyroclastic deposits on the slopes of Mount<br />
Pinatubo, inundating barrios Sto. Niño, San<br />
Juan, San Pedro Cutud and Magliman; the<br />
town, led by Mayor Rey B. Aquino, rallies<br />
the people to build a dam to protect the<br />
rest of the town from succeeding lahar flows.<br />
1998<br />
The Sinukwan Festival is held for the first<br />
time in San Fernando.<br />
1999<br />
San Fernando receives the Galing Pook<br />

“Breaking Financial Barriers.”<br />
2000<br />

Fuentebella and Senate<br />
President Aquilino<br />
Pimentel sign the approved<br />
city charter of San<br />
Fernando on December 4<br />

2001<br />
On February 4, the town<br />
becomes a component city<br />
following the ratification of<br />
Republic Act 8990<br />
authored by Rep. Oscar<br />
Rodriguez during a plebiscite<br />
held the previous day.<br />
Dr. Rey Aquino becomes<br />
the first city mayor.<br />
