The field investigation was initiated by Kate Wilson, Inspector of Ancient Monuments,<br />

<strong>English</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong>, to assist with ongoing conservation <strong>an</strong>d m<strong>an</strong>agement initiatives at<br />

<strong>Sockburn</strong>. The earthwork survey was undertaken by Marcus Jecock <strong>an</strong>d Dave Went<br />

from <strong>English</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong>’s Research Department,with occasional assist<strong>an</strong>ce from retired<br />

<strong>English</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> archaeologist Chris Dunn, <strong>an</strong>d from Mike Collins, <strong>English</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong><br />

Archaeologist for Hadri<strong>an</strong>’sWall. Chris Dunn also made a photographic record of the<br />

site, <strong>an</strong>d kindly gave permission for some of these images to be used in this report.<br />

Other photographs were taken by the authors. Members of the Architectural &<br />

Archaeological Society of Durham <strong>an</strong>d Northumberl<strong>an</strong>d - M <strong>an</strong>d E Smith, A Catterall<br />

<strong>an</strong>d C Wilson - compiled the graveyard survey in Appendix 3 to this report.<br />

The <strong>archaeological</strong> background <strong>an</strong>d historical sources were researched by DaveWent,<br />

who also undertook the earthwork <strong>an</strong>alysis in collaboration with Marcus Jecock <strong>an</strong>d<br />

with advice from other members of the Archaeological Survey <strong>an</strong>d Investigation team<br />

based inYork. The earthwork pl<strong>an</strong> (Figure 20) was drawn by DaveWent. The location<br />

maps (Figures 1 <strong>an</strong>d 2) were produced by Philip Sinton.<br />

The authors would like to express their gratitude to the Gatheral family, owners of<br />

the hall <strong>an</strong>d grounds, <strong>an</strong>d in particular to Mary Gatheral, for allowing access to the<br />

property <strong>an</strong>d for her warm hospitality throughout the project. Our th<strong>an</strong>ks are also<br />
