ENGLISH HERITAGE RESEARCH DEPARTMENT<br />

<strong>English</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> undertakes <strong>an</strong>d commissions research into the historic<br />

environment, <strong>an</strong>d the issues that affect its condition <strong>an</strong>d survival, in order to<br />

provide the underst<strong>an</strong>ding necessary for informed policy <strong>an</strong>d decision making,<br />

for sustainable m<strong>an</strong>agement, <strong>an</strong>d to promote the widest access, appreciation<br />

<strong>an</strong>d enjoyment of our heritage.<br />

The Research Department provides <strong>English</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> with this capacity<br />

in the fields of buildings history, archaeology, <strong>an</strong>d l<strong>an</strong>dscape history. It brings<br />

together seven teams with complementary investigative <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>alytical skills<br />

to provide integrated research expertise across the r<strong>an</strong>ge of the historic<br />

environment. These are:<br />

* Aerial Survey <strong>an</strong>d Investigation<br />

* Archaeological Projects (excavation)<br />

* Archaeological Science<br />

* Archaeological Survey <strong>an</strong>d Investigation (l<strong>an</strong>dscape <strong>an</strong>alysis)<br />

* Architectural Investigation<br />

* Imaging, Graphics <strong>an</strong>d Survey (including measured <strong>an</strong>d<br />

metric survey, <strong>an</strong>d photography)<br />

* Survey of London<br />

The Research Department undertakes a wide r<strong>an</strong>ge of investigative <strong>an</strong>d<br />

<strong>an</strong>alytical projects, <strong>an</strong>d provides quality assur<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d m<strong>an</strong>agement support<br />

for externally-commissioned research. We aim for innovative work of the<br />

highest quality which will set agendas <strong>an</strong>d st<strong>an</strong>dards for the historic<br />

environment sector. In support of this, <strong>an</strong>d to build capacity <strong>an</strong>d promote best<br />

practice in the sector, we also publish guid<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>an</strong>d provide advice <strong>an</strong>d training.<br />

We support outreach <strong>an</strong>d education activities <strong>an</strong>d build these in to our projects<br />

<strong>an</strong>d programmes wherever possible.<br />

We make the results of our work available through the Research Department<br />

Report Series, <strong>an</strong>d through journal publications <strong>an</strong>d monographs. Our<br />

publication Research News, which appears three times a year, aims to keep<br />

our partners within <strong>an</strong>d outside <strong>English</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> up-to-date with our projects<br />
