TWO NEW SCHOLARSHIPS ESTABLISHED<br />
AT VIRGINIA SEMINARY<br />
In thanksgiving for his own education<br />
at <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Seminary</strong>, The Reverend Alfred<br />
Thomas Knies, Jr., Scholarship Fund will be<br />
used to provide fi nancial assistance to<br />
students in need who are enrolled in the<br />
MDiv program at VTS in preparation for<br />
ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church.<br />
A bombadier in World War II, Mr.<br />
Knies was captured and imprisoned in a<br />
German POW camp for several months. At<br />
the end of the war he received numerous<br />
honors, including the Air Medal Blue/Yellow<br />
Ribbon for Meritorious Service.<br />
After several years as an architectural<br />
engineer, Mr. Knies entered <strong>Virginia</strong><br />
<strong>Seminary</strong>, graduating<br />
in 1962<br />
and serving<br />
the Dioceses<br />
of Texas and<br />
West Texas for<br />
27 years. He<br />
led congregations<br />
and<br />
communities of<br />
Burnet Marble<br />
Falls, Houston,<br />
Huntsville, and Pharr, and in retirement<br />
continued to serve as interim priest in<br />
several Texas parishes.<br />

The Ronnie A. Yoder Scholarship will provide fi -<br />
nancial assistance to students enrolled in either<br />
the MDiv or the MTS program with the goal of<br />
advancing the study of love as an appropriate<br />
center of Christian<br />
theology, life, preaching<br />
and practice, and<br />
to explore love as an<br />
ecumenical theme<br />
unifying all of humankind’s<br />
religions.<br />
Judge Yoder, who<br />
often describes himself<br />
as a light-skinned<br />
black to emphasize<br />
the brotherhood of<br />
man, the universality<br />
of God’s love, and<br />
the agreement of anthropology and scriptures,<br />
is the Chief Administrative Law Judge of the<br />
Department of Transportation. His career as a<br />
federal administrative law judge spans 31 years,<br />
following 14 years in private practice in New<br />
York and Washington. He also spent a year at<br />
Yale Divinity School as a Rockefeller Fellow,<br />
and sang professionally with the Washington<br />
Opera for several years. Judge Yoder also has<br />
sung with local churches and has written music.<br />
