TWO NEW SCHOLARSHIPS ESTABLISHED
AT VIRGINIA SEMINARY
In thanksgiving for his own education
at Virginia Seminary, The Reverend Alfred
Thomas Knies, Jr., Scholarship Fund will be
used to provide fi nancial assistance to
students in need who are enrolled in the
MDiv program at VTS in preparation for
ordained ministry in the Episcopal Church.
A bombadier in World War II, Mr.
Knies was captured and imprisoned in a
German POW camp for several months. At
the end of the war he received numerous
honors, including the Air Medal Blue/Yellow
Ribbon for Meritorious Service.
After several years as an architectural
engineer, Mr. Knies entered Virginia
Seminary, graduating
in 1962
and serving
the Dioceses
of Texas and
West Texas for
27 years. He
led congregations
and
communities of
Burnet Marble
Falls, Houston,
Huntsville, and Pharr, and in retirement
continued to serve as interim priest in
several Texas parishes.

The Ronnie A. Yoder Scholarship will provide fi -
nancial assistance to students enrolled in either
the MDiv or the MTS program with the goal of
advancing the study of love as an appropriate
center of Christian
theology, life, preaching
and practice, and
to explore love as an
ecumenical theme
unifying all of humankind’s
religions.
Judge Yoder, who
often describes himself
as a light-skinned
black to emphasize
the brotherhood of
man, the universality
of God’s love, and
the agreement of anthropology and scriptures,
is the Chief Administrative Law Judge of the
Department of Transportation. His career as a
federal administrative law judge spans 31 years,
following 14 years in private practice in New
York and Washington. He also spent a year at
Yale Divinity School as a Rockefeller Fellow,
and sang professionally with the Washington
Opera for several years. Judge Yoder also has
sung with local churches and has written music.
