even, it is okay. It means that you have
been willing to bear the pain of loss
for the sake of life and love.
Long before Thomas Wolfe
inspired teenage girls to hold fast to
those things that are beautiful and true
and good, the apostle Paul implored
the Church at Philippi with words
more felicitous and far less sentimental:
“And now, brothers and sisters,
whatsoever things are true; whatsoever
things are honest; whatsoever
things are just; whatsoever things are
pure; whatsoever things are lovely;
whatsoever things are of good report;
if there be any virtue, and if there be
any praise, think on these things.”
Go forth into the world, my
friends; go forth in joy. Be strong and
of good courage. Hold fast to that
which is good. Do not render evil for
evil. Arouse the careless; strengthen
the faint-hearted; respect the dignity
of all persons; and love and serve the
Lord with gladness. And may the
God of truth and peace be always
with you.
