RECOGNIZING THE MINISTRY OF THE LAITY<br />
The Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans Award<br />
Jennifer McConnachie, pictured below in her clinic outside of Umtata,<br />
South Africa, was awarded the Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans Award in<br />
2006, and was recognized at <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>Seminary</strong> in April of this year.<br />
Mrs. McConnachie is the founder of the African Medical Mission in<br />
Itipini, a deeply impoverished community of displaced rural people who<br />
have created a makeshift settlement in the local landfi ll. The McConnachies<br />
have served these, the poorest of the poor, selfl essly and compassionately<br />
for many years.<br />
The Lettie Pate Whitehead Evans Award is given annually to an Episcopalian<br />
layperson who has given leadership and unique witness to the<br />
Gospel of Jesus Christ within his or her congregation, community, diocese,<br />
and in the world over a signifi cant period of time.<br />
