Valve narrowly lanceolate, with apices slightly rostrate-capitate ; pseudo-<br />

raphe narrow; strioe well marked, about 13 in 1 c.d.m., interrupted in the<br />

middle of the valve by a hyaline space, elongated, generally quadrangular.<br />

Length, about 13 c.d.m.<br />

Freshwater. Brussels (Delogne) England (W. Sm., Comber). Ireland (O'Meara). Here<br />

and there throughout Europe.<br />

var. delicatissima Grun. (S. deluatissima W. Sm. ; H.V.H. Atl.,<br />

Shorter and much narrower, with apices somewhat more strongly<br />

to 10 c.d.m.<br />

distinct. Striae robust, about 9 in 1 c.d.m., distinctly punctate, absent at the<br />

apices of the v.ilve, which are covered with very fine granules. Length, 16 to<br />

22 c.d.m.<br />

Marine. -Not yet found in Belgium. England (W. Sm., Stolt), Scotland (Kitton in Baxter<br />

Coll. No. 4293), Ireland (O'Meara), and on all the Coasts of Europe.
